Corn syrup for constipation?

SO called yesterday & told me he thinks DS is a little constipated.  I told him to mix a tablespoon of prune, pear, or apple juice in with his formula or oatmeal.  Don't feed him bananas.

Instead, SO listened to his grandma's advice, of all things, & gave him a little bit of corn syrup.  This is the woman that says to put sugar on his tongue when he has hiccups & brandy on his gums for teething.  Yeah, okay.  I wasn't very thrilled, to say the least & now I'm googling & have found that corn syrup may carry botulism?!

Great.

Re: Corn syrup for constipation?

  • DH's grandma said sugar on his tongue for hiccups too.  And he did it.  We had a talk after we left his grandma's, LOL.

The botulism risk is prob very, very small.  I wouldn't worry too much.

  • Yeah, I think my brother lived on evaporated milk and karo syrup as an infant (wth! it was my grandma's advice...of course he was born in 1963, but still...).

Don't worry about it. But I'd try diluted prune juice next time :)

  • Yes corn syrup will help our ped told us to try it with DD. You have to put a tbls in each bottle till the constipation clears up. I will say it didn't work for DD. Dr had us give her 2-4 oz of pear juice each day .  I will tell you that our ped told us not to use the apple or white grape juice because it is hard on the stomach and can cause really painful gas .
  • yes our Pedi said to use it not to put anything up his butt.....and it worked for us. They dont really recommened the juice but the Karo Syrup they did.

  • Oh, I'm sure DS will be fine.  It's just not something I'd prefer to give DS over other, what I'd consider more natural, remedies like pear or prune juice. SO has already told me he won't give him anymore.

I'm more irritated that he listened to his grandma over me.  We've had talks about listening to advice from the "older generation" & I thought we were on the same page.  Not to mention, if you knew his grandma, you'd understand on an entirely different level.  It's hard to put her into words.  To put it nicely, she's over-opinionated & mean.
