I usually scrub it under cold water so the stain won't set it. I also use Dreft stain remover before throwing it in the washer. I'm not sure if HE washers will make a difference, but the stains do disappear after doing all of that. GL!
I use oxi clean stain remover as soon as it happens, it usually removes the stain if I wash it right away. If my son has a blow out at night, it usually takes two washes to get it out.

I use BacOut (by Biokleen) spray and I don't dilute it. Works great for bodily fluids and foods.
Then I add oxigen cleaner (brand doesn't matter) to my wash water with my normal detergent.
If the stain is not out after that, then I do NOT dry it in the dryer, because that can "set" the stain in the fabric. I like to put garment outside in the sun. The sun is like a miracle stain remover! If it is winter and I can't put the item out, then I will often sun it in my window or on the dash in the car.
If all that somehow fails, I will keep doing the routine until the stain is out or until I realize that it will never come out. LOL. It usually does come out though, especially the body fluids and foods.
I confess to being totally lazy. I pretreat nothing. Keep in mind though, that I use CD. If poop gets on anything (whether CD or clothes) it goes in the diaper pail. I wash with the CDs (cold wash/soak with a tiny amount of soap, hot wash with slightly more soap). Anything that comes out still stained gets hung to dry in the sun.
The sun take out EBF poop stains wonderfully. If, for some reason it doesn't, I do use a small amount of Oxiclean the next time.
