UO

I think tattoos and excessive piercings are trashy.

I also think that tattoos and excessive piercings are a form of self mutilation and the people who get them are idiots for doing so.

I don't think they are self-expression and are nothing more than permanent doodles and holes.

I cannot take people with sleeves, neck, hand, chest, etc. tattoos seriously.

  • I'm going to somewhat agree, I hate seeing 18yo girls with stars and cupcakes or something stupid all over them. Or multiple facial peircings. Most people have terrible hygiene so I can't imagine how gross their faces are. I hate the punk trend that's going on...they look dirty and stupid.

  • I guess I'm trashy then. That's ok with me.

For the record: My tattoos are unique (drawn by me) and mean the world to me. I don't expect everyone to like or appreciate them. We all express ourselves in different ways. I will say this, I don't believe in getting "cute" or cool tattoos just for the heck of it.

  • I think you better get over it honestly.  Our generation is full of tattooed smart people.  I know quite a few of them.

My husband has tattoos and I think they are super sexy.  His arm has this pretty sky with clouds and birds.  I think it is beautiful art.

edit b/c I cannot seem to spell tattoo.

  • I wouldn't say 'trashy', just nms.  Me nor DH have tattoos and we like it that way.

  • I totally agree! DH and I have no tattoos, nor do our parents or siblings. I hate to admit this, but I totally look down at others that have tattoos.

That "trend" has been popular for like 10 years now, then again I'm from seattle, grunge has always been the thing. DH had the piercings and huge green mohawk with red bondage pants back in HS, but never got a tatoo. The holes are all healed now and you'd never be able to tell.

I think personally if a tatto is done someplace where it's easily hideable than that's cool. Also some people look good (IMO) with visable tattoo's. One thing that does bother me, are tattoo's on your neck or face. Also nose rings have always looked gross to me, I've seen only one or two girls who I thought looked good with one.

Psst. Mine aren't works of art. They are however symbols of what are important to me and what define me. Don't be so quick to look down on someone who chooses something you don't understand. Rather, seek to understand. Your judgments will limit you.

P.S. Ancient tribes used to brand and tattoo themselves as well. I guess you look down on them too eh?

This makes me sad.  My DH is fully tattooed on his chest, wraps around his shoulder and has 6 additional tats on his upper arms and sides and he is the most amazing person ever.  He would give the shirt off his back to a stranger if they needed it, he gives a lot to charity through united way and he gives to local organizations as well. He works hard, is a great father and a great husband.  I'm sorry that if you would meet him in public you would literally look down on him because he is a really a great guy.

Whatever, it's your loss to judge people just because of appearance.  Not to mention if DH had a shirt on you probably wouldn't even see them.  I love it and think he is sexy...I'd do himStick out tongue

edit: I wanted to add that I don't have any tattoos.

Love it!! Mine all have meaning and are a time line of moments in my life. I think a thought out and well placed tattoo on a woman can be hot. I do have to say that I?m not into random excessive tattoos.

Be careful how quick you are to judge too.  You child could very easily have sleeves of tattoos as an adult.  What if your DH or a family member decided to get tattoos, does that automatically make you better than them?  Sorry, your statements just really bothered me because you are coming off so holier than thou about it.  Who cares if people get tattoos, it is their choice.  Why be so judgey about it?

IMO it's art. Just as the clothing I choose to wear expresses my tastes and intrests, tattoo's express all kinds of things, just as a wall painting expresses a view from an artist. If you have generic tattoo's you have generic tastes. A good friend of mine has a tatto representing a change in her life when her house and everything she owned burned down, it's expression which makes it art, to me at least.

Having my own opinion does not make me an idiot, I am allowed to have an opnion, just because you don't agree with it doesn't make it wrong.   I have friends and other family members that have tattoos- and most of them wish they had never gotten them, some have even gone through the pain of having some or all of their's removed.

I grew up being told, NEVER NEVER get a tattoo- it's forever. If you get something pierced something at least you can take it out. I also was never around anyone that had one, so to me it was something I never had the desire to do.

I am a judgey person- oh well- that's who I am. I never said I would not be friends with someone just because they had a tattoo- as I stated before I have friends who have tattoos.

  • I don't think it is self mutilation. Thats going a bit far. Yeah it hurts (some people) but so does getting your ears pierced, getting your eyebrows waxed, hell even walking around in some shoes hurt more than that!

I love my tattoos (both are easy to hide, and both have a lot of special meaning to me) and I really love my nose stud.

This UO is definitely unpopular. Tattoos are beautiful.

  • Tattoos are just not my style. I honestly can't think of a single thing I would want on my body for the rest of my life, but that's just me.  I don't look down on people who have them, and I don't think they're "stupid". I also have no problem with subtle facial piercings. I think nose studs look really good on some people. It is when people go overboard on the facial piercings that I think they've crossed some sort of line. There are some people that are almost painful to look at because of all the piercings in their face. I don't understand that at all, and I totally think it is self mutilation.

So you are friends with people you look down upon? You're ok with being judgmental...you're really coming off as an awesome person. No really, who doesn't want friends that look down on them?

  • Everyone is entitled to their own opinion- how boring would this world be (or this board for that matter) if we all felt the same. Not liking something or looking down at others goes in all directions. There are people that look down at others for formula feeding, using disposible diapers, being a working mom, having tattoos, not having tattoos, having or not having piercings, co sleeping, using CIO, and so on and so on- it doesn't matter what the topic people are all going to have different opnions. We are all judgey when it comes to something.

Just because you do not agree with that person's opinion does not make it wrong. I apologize to anyone who I offended- that was not my intention.

  • I think it's probably worth mentioning that most people with tattoos have them because it means something to THEM and they dont care if other people are impressed, or understand, or even have an opinion. They are a form of self expression, and to say otherwise is silly. Clothing, makeup, music, hair- all of these things are forms of self expression and tattoos are no different. You dont have to LIKE it though ;)

Um, yes opinions are fine. However when you admit to looking down upon your friends and others for tattoos than that just makes you look like an ugly person (inside). It's one thing to have an opinion and it's another to act on them.

  • I can understand saying tattoos aren't your thing. I could give a sh!t if someone does or does not have a tattoo. What I find annoying, however, is people saying they look down on or think someone is trashy because they have tattoos or piercings. I really don't understand why it even matters to you.
  • It definitely doesn't bother me that you think my husband and I are trash. Big Smile

I have 4 tattoos (soon to be 5) and until recently had my tongue and belly button pierced. My husband has one full sleeve and one half sleeve. I think it's hot. I kind of got hot jsut thinking about it now, so thanks for making me hot for hubby in the middle of the day for no reason. YAY!

Wow. I understand people can have their own opinions and everything, but that is one the most close-minded comments I have ever heard on this board. Art is not restricted to a certain media or form, art can be expressed on a wall, through a hairstyle, clothing, music, or even on your body. Doesn't give you the right to look down on someone, yeesh.

What I don't get is how you went from being unapologetic about being judgmental to apologizing for possibly offending anyone. If you don't have anything nice to say keep mum my dear. I'm not offended; I just have no problem being upfront with others in a tactful way.

As soon as I was reading people's post's I was concerned that people were offended. I was merely expressing my opinion- if that was offensive to people I wanted people to know that was not my intention and that I was sorry.

I will own up to being judgmental any day of the week, but I forget how that can come across in a message board situation.

  • My husband and I intelligent, classy people. He is covered in tattoos and I have a few.  I plan on getting both my arms sleeved and I have a few other tattoos in mind.  I think it's ridiculous to assume someone is trash just because they choose to get tattooed.  It's like assuming someone is trash because they dye their hair a certain color or go tanning.  The only difference is tattoos aren't necessarily the "norm".  It is a form of expression. I personally find tattoos incredibly attractive.

*sigh* If you're going to correct someone's spelling...please make sure you do it correctly. It should be "theirs," not "there's." The sentence implies ownership of the tattoos. Not a place. Not to mention, correcting someone's spelling while trying to argue a point just puts your argument on shaky ground. It makes you look juvenile. Attack the argument logically, not the person.
