I don't know what to choose

The stanford NICU wants to move him as soon as his iNO study is up on Tuesday.  I can either move him to the intermediate care nursery or to a level 3 NICU closer to home.  He'll have all new doctors and nurses either way.  I just don't think he's ready to be out of the NICU.  He's still having a lot of bradys and desats related to reflux(/handling (see previous post)).  It seems like they are getting worse, not better.

If i bring him closer to home its 20min instead of 2hours drive but i'm giving up access to all the sub-specialty doctors.  not that he needs them.  right now he's just see the opthamologist and the developmental team.  he doesn't have eye problems yet; they are just monitoring for ROP still.

When i went to visit the intermediate care nursery it might as well have been the well baby nursery.  all the babies were in bassinets and off O2.  There were only 2 nurses for a giant room full of babies.

What do i do?

TIA

  • I would ask the neos for a recommendation.

  • I'm a NICU nurse...and I couldn't stand the "special care" nursery.  The nurses were lazy...and didn't help me feed the girls at all.

I vote for the NICU near you.  (that's just me.../what I would do)

  • We chose to keep E at the hospital I delivered at in Boston rather than transfer her to a special care nursery closer to home.  We just didn't want to adjust to a new set of doctors and nurses.  That said we are 20 min from Boston so it would have only cut about 10 minutes off the trip.  Do what you feel most comfortable with.
