NER: Hospital Bag

I'm packing my and baby's bags and was hoping for some help.  I have several lists I'm working from so I don't need that - what I'd like help with is selective editing of these lists.  I would love to hear:

what you packed but never used

or

what you didn't pack but wished you had

Thanks ladies!

Re: NER: Hospital Bag

  • I used my camera and video camera, toiletries for a much needed shower (including hairdryer and flatiron), a nursing tank and gaucho pants.  For dd, I used her going home outfit.  THAT'S IT!  I loved having my own pillows, but those obviously weren't in my bag.  I felt like a million bucks after taking that shower and fixing my hair.

  • I did not use much of what I took.  I had 2 magazines, deck of cards, a CD, DVDs (although, DH watched them).  I did not use any nightgown or clothes.

I used a robe during labor because I was freezing.

I used my flip flops and socks.

I really was glad I took saltine crackers and pop tarts as snacks for after.

I did use my toiletries but I definitely did not even take stuff to do my hair...or make-up.

I wore sweat pants and a T-shirt home.

We had a PJ/onesie for DS...that's all we used for him.  The hospital provided everything.  Oh, I wish I would have brought a bottle or 2 and boughten my pump before hand....but I never thought I wasn't going to be able to BF.

They also even had soap/shampoo for me....I used my own.

I could not stand, walk, pee.....or do much of anything after DS came....So I didn't have the desire to use anything!

  • Mmm - poptarts!  I think I will need to buy some of those.  I was trying to think of what kind of food I would want for after (though if I'm really desperate our hospital has a 24 hour McDonald's and a chocolate milkshake always sounds good).

  • I used my own pillows and boppy, my own tolietries, vitamin water and odwalla drinks, slippers and bathrobe (for walking around during labor and after my c-section), and DD's coming home outfit. I was also happy to have my sleeping eye mask because I needed to nap when baby napped during the day, and the sunlight was really bright through the hospital curtains. I also used my birthing ball during labor.

    Good luck!

  • i didn't use hardly anything that i packed.  a camera, phone, some toiletries, PJs/nightgown, clothes to wear home for both mom and baby are all you really need.
  • Wish I had taken:

    • more pillows.  I had 2 kings, one standard, and 2 or 3 throw pillows.  I labored in the bed and just needed more to feel comfortable.
    • Boppy.
    • Yummy snacks - we brought nuts and gatorade for during the birth but nothing for after
    • Pillow and blanket for DH to spend the night (hosp had them but they sucked)
    • HUGE water bottle or insulated jug for water.  I was SO thirsty after the birth and the hosp just gave this little pitcher that I'd drink in like 1 minute.

    Used:

    • toothbrush & toothpaste and other basic toiletries
    • underwear
    • nursing tank
    • camera and video camera
    • lotion - dh used it to rub my back during labor
    • robe and slippers/flip flops
    • change of clothes for DH and his toiletries

    Didn't use:

    • all the clothes/pj's I brought.  i felt so gross and in pain all i wanted to use was the hosp gown since it was easy access and it didn't matter if it got nasty.
    • DS's going home outfit.  Dr said we shouldn't use it since it was a one piece sleeper since the cord would rub on it.  We brought him home in hosp shirt and diaper w/ blankie around him.
  • Thank you!  This really helps.

  • My own maxi pads were so much better then the hospital ones, which bunched up and didn't have adhesive to stick to my panties.  Oh, and as per my midwife, never Always pads, as they cause chafing.
