How to wash a wool area rug?

MIL tracked dog sh*t all over our blue and brown area rug, so spot cleaning won't work. Should we just take it outside and wash it with a hose, rug cleaner and a scrub brush, or will that ruin it? *sigh* This is why I don't like shoes in the house.

ETA:  I actually love MIL, and I'm not upset with her about this.  DH insisted she bring DD outside while he was raking leaves, even though he hadn't picked up all the poop yet, and we just had a ton of rain a few days ago. But still, walking into the house, especially onto a rug, with wet, muddy, poop covered shoes would never occur to me as something to do.

Re: How to wash a wool area rug?

  • Yuck!  I have my area rugs steam cleaned when I have the rest of the carpets in the house done.  I suggest calling someone like Chem Dry or Dalworth or a similar company that is in your area and find out how much they would charge then have them clean it and pass the cost on to your MIL.
