Cloth Diapering

Pail upstairs, downstairs or both?

This is our first LO, so I'm trying to get everything ready before she gets here. Both bedrooms are on the second floor, but until we go to bed, we're almost never up there. We plan to have a pack n'play w/changer in the living room and there are bathrooms on both floors (pretty small baths, though). I'm wondering where I should put the diaper pail/s. Suggestions?

Re: Pail upstairs, downstairs or both?

  • I plan on having something on both floors here - you never know when and where you'll do a diaper change. You're so lucky you have a bathroom on both floors though! Both of ours are downstairs.

  • probably a pail downstairs with large wet bag and a just a small wet bag upstairs.
  • We live in a three story home and I put a diaper basket and pail on each level and I only use the one in the nursery.  It's just easier for me when it comes to laundry or changing her after a blowout to do it upstairs (our washer/dryer is in the bathroom next to the nursery).  It's also easier to just put all my CDs away in one location.  When I had them all over the house, I might run out of diapers in one spot faster than another spot and it just became a pain.

  • I should add that I think if I was doing disposables it would be easier to have one on each level, but with washing my diapers every other day, it was just easier for me to have them in one spot.  During the first 3 weeks I used newborn disposables and I did use the changing baskets throughout the house.

  • We have just one in DS's room upstairs . I only change him in there and that is how have always been even at old house that was one floor. I just find it easier to have everything in one place and not have to worry about running out of dipes or wipes at a different places or anything.

  • We just have a hanging wetbag in LOs room. I find that I never change her anywhere but the changing table. Its easier for me to have all my CDs in one spot and only worry about one bag come laundry day.

IMO, I would do one location for now. If you end up needing a second after LO comes, you can always buy one then. You will however want to get 2 liners/wetbags anyway so you can have one in the wash and one in- use.

  • We keep a large hanging wetbag upstairs in the nursery and our larger pail and pail liner downstairs in the bathroom (where most of the changes happen).

  • We have a small one upstairs since we only really change him once a day up there and a big one downstairs since that is where most changes occur.  I am glad we have both.
