Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

when did you introduce crayons?

I have a set of crayons for my kids but havent really broken them out yet. I got sidewalk chalk & they were not interested in trying to 'scribble', just putting it in their mouth & carrying it around so I was thinking crayons might be the same.... although smaller & maybe easier to help them with if I pull them up to the table in a booster seat...???

Re: when did you introduce crayons?

  • We started around a 12-15 months, I think. I don't really remember! She loves coloring and asks for us to get her crayons down from the counter multiple times per day. Just bust them out and give them a try!

  • We tried this summer (15 months), but he's really just started to play with them (20 months).  I think he prefers his markers.  He really loves his play doh and has since this summer.

  • Our sitter introduced them around 12 months and he loves them! We still have to fish out bits of crayons from his mouth every-so-often, though.
  • I tried introducing them at 12 months and again just yesterday.  Both times he scribbled briefly, then just chewed on the crayons and crayon box.  I'm going to wait a little bit before trying again.

  • We gave her Crayole Tadoodles yesterday (so 15.5 months). Success!

  • Washable markers have been working better than Crayons.  He doesn't have to push down as hard to make the marks.  He loves putting the cap on and off too.  A little messy but washable.
  • We did around 12mos, I think. He still tried to eat them, but he also colored. Now he's a lot better about just coloring, thug I'd be lying if I said he never tried to chew on them.
  • about the washable markers & crayons...whats the best way to wash off? do you pretreat clothes w/ stain stuff? does it come off skin w/ soap & water? what about carpet & walls? My plan is to have them in booster chairs at the kitchen table but if I want to use them in our playroom...?
  • The washable markers come off hands/face with just water. Same with walls. And clothes get clean with just a regular wash. Not sure about carpet, though.
  • I kind of started yesterday. He seen another girl coloring and he seemed interested. he was a little. I don't think they get as interested until they are around 2.
