Baby Names

Is Isaac generally a Jewish name?

I like the name, but in his usual contradictory fashion, DH is trying to tell me that it's a Jewish name.

Not that we have anything against Judiasm, just curious.

  • I've always thought it to be a biblical name.

  • I'm pretty sure it's an old testament name, which could be what he means. I dunno. Try this https://tinyurl.com/2gxud8g

  • It's a common OT name but definitely of the Protestant sort as well. Out here at least.

  • Well it is in the OT, but I know Isaacs that aren't Jewish.
  • Nope, it's just an Old Testament name.
  • It's a Biblical name and while a lot of Jewish people use OT names, this isn't exclusively Jewish anymore.  I know 2 little boys named Isaac that are not Jewish. :-)

This, totally agree. Jewish people certainly use it but it's not only a Jewish name. Also, I really like it!

  • We've picked Isaac if LO is DS#2 and we're sorta kinda Catholic/atheist/Buddhists  lol

Plus, the NNs Ike, Zac and Zeke definitely aren't Jewish sounding to me

  • I think it's a biblical name. I've only met one person named Isaac, and he wasn't Jewish. He was extremely smart and very nice, and so I've aways liked the name!
  • This! My nephew is a budding Protestant Isaac.

I would say it is about as Jewish as David or Samuel. Old Testament, so Jewish roots, but really mainstream enough to be used by a variety of people.

  • I like it and I think it's great with Matthew. No, it's not a strictly Jewish name. It's Biblical so Christians use it as well (as do other people).
  • My first instinct is that it's a Christian name, but then again... I am Christian, so that's a different background!

  • I always think Isaac Hayes.  Don't think he's Jewish ;)

Old testament names are Jewish of course.  But they are also popular among Christians.

  • It is an Old Testament name, making it common in Judaism as well as in Christianity.  The only Isaac's I've ever known were all Christians, though.  I certainly don't associate it as a "Jewish" name.

  • I know several non-Jews with this name. I think it is particularly Christian/biblical, though. It doesn't have Matthew's level of neutrality.

Exactly, no more  Jewish than Jacob, Adam, Benjamin, Joshua, Caleb, Aaron etc.  The name has Hebrew roots but isn't a Jewish name.
