Anyone ever give their LO a bleach bath?

DD had her 15 mo. appt. yesterday. She has bad eczema on her elbows, knees and ankles and scratches herself raw. I have tried CerVe, Eucerin, Vaseline, Aquaphor, cortisone for itch, prescription steriod creams....

Pedi recommended putting her on Zyrtec for the itching and give bleach baths and then put the steriod and top with Aquaphor to clear up the patches she has. Anyone try bleach baths and do they work?

DS doesn't have eczema, but I have heard of people doing the bleach bath before as a treatment when other things are not working. ?

You just dump a cup of liquid bleach into their full bath. He is it is the equivalent of chlorine in a swimming pool. He said it is very diluted and not an issue if they get some in their mouth or anything. He said the raw patches can become infected and this is a way of cleaning them out and clearing them up. He warned me I would think he was nuts but it works. I admit I thought it sounded terrible, but I think the poor thing being itchy and scratching at herself is more terrible.

I never heard of this until I googled it. I say try it, but make sure it is diluted enough.

Our pediatric dermatologist only recommends bleach baths if the child has several raw, infected patches of eczema, that haven't responded to topical treatments.

My brother is a wrestler, he coaches now that hes an adult but he started when he was 4. Ring worm is a big (and gross) issue in the sport. I remember my mom giving him bleach baths when he was little, when he was in HS he would just dab bleach on it. I would try a really, really diluted bath first.

Yeah, she has a couple nasty spots I have tried creams and antibiotic creams on that are stubborn.

I know! I was mentioning at work I thought it was odd and one of the girls told me how her pedi told her to put Pepto-Bismol on a severe diaper rash!

Ask your Dr to prescribe triamcinolone acetonide cream Rx. This cleared up my son overnight. Now we just maintain.

I've never had to do them for my kids (not yet at least), but I've had to take a few myself. My skin was super sensitive growing up, and when I was in junior high it was at its worst. I'd get eczema outbreaks on my legs and arms, and when they got out of control I'd do the bleach bath thing. It worked pretty well for me. Then I started swimming competitively year round in high school and didn't have a single eczema outbreak for the entire 4 years, I assume because of the chlorine I was in almost daily.

Just make sure that immediately afterward you hydrate the skin really well with a good lotion. I use Eucerin myself.

Mylanta/maalox is my go-to. My SIL's pedi recommended it and it was the only thing that cleared up her son's really bad rash.

I haven't tried it but had researched it quite a bit when LO was diagnosed with exzema on her diaper area. Luckily for me the prescription cream worked like a charm, and it was not reoccuring, but I say go for it. Look a little online for more info, but if your doctor has recommended it-I'd say it's a pretty safe option. I know how it feels to be willing to try anything to just relieve that pain for your LO!

Forget all those people who are ignorant to the idea or the reasons behind it (it's not like you're dunking her in the clorox bottle) and be grateful that they are not you child's doctor or parent!

What kind of lotion do you use on a normal/daily basis? We use the Aveeno baby lotion that's for eczema, but maybe we need to use something stronger? Our pedi has only every recommended using hydrocortisone cream every other day, but that's just not cutting it. She only gets a bath 2-3 times per week and we try not to do too much soap.

It wasn't as bad in the summer, but since the weather started to get cold it's awful. It's just on the back of both of her legs, especially in the creases in the back of her knees.

Both neutralize the acid that can cause diaper rash.

If it works then I'm all for it, I would just be afraid that the water wasn't diluted enough. Bleach is such a harsh chemical, I would be very careful and start out with a small amount in the beginning.

I have considered it, but havent had to do it yet. J's legs have gotten pretty bad since it started to get cold, but I bought this tube of cortizone cream made for eczema and so far it is helping. We also cut out his cinnamon cereal (cinnamon can be an allergy problem) and IDK if that it helping also, but he has lots of food allergies (dairy, egg, nuts, seeds) so im sure hes sensitive to many other things as well.

I heard of it, but probably because DD had eczema. Luckily, it seemed to have subsided for right now. If she was in bad shape I would totally do it. Hope it helps your LO!

DS2 has horrible eczema. Someone once told us to do a bleach bath, but I would never do it. I won't even have the stuff in my house, let alone put it directly on my LO's skin.

I have found that California Baby Calendula Cream works wonders for DS's eczema. Maybe give that a try. Oatmeal baths also work well too. I take real oatmeal and put it in the end of a pair of pantyhose and actually steep it in the tub like I would a tea bag. You'll feel all the slimy stuff start coming out of the oatmeal - that's what you want on LO's skin.

I also can only bathe him once a week during the winter months.

DS had a neck rash and the doctor told me to wash it with bleach. She said she knows that sounds weird but it works and it is healthier than giving him antibiotics. It was weird and I didn't like doing it - but it worked.
