Breastfeeding

do you give a pacifier?

Hi,

My son is 2mths and I EBF.  We havent given a pacifier yet, but when he wants to nap he tends to latch on just to suck, and with me going back to work in Jan and Evan going to daycare, I need to make sure he doesnt do this there.  Do you use a pacifier to help with those moments, does it confuse your baby?

Thanks

Jenn

Re: do you give a pacifier?

  • We've used a Soothies pacifier since day3 in the hospital and it hasn't confused DS at all.

  • I use pacis just to help him go to sleep if he needs it. If he seems to be going to sleep just fine without needing to suck on anything then I let it be. And once he falls asleep he's completely fine if it falls out since we didn't really use them from day 1. And he's not confused over it. Give it a try :)
  • We use pacis (soothies).  I went 5 days without one after she was born because I was afraid of "nipple confusion".  Generally speaking, if you're not having any breastfeeding issues it's ok to give.
  • If that is what you chose 2 months is a good time to introduce a paci. Just don't forget that as it may seem easier to do that now once your LO uses it you will have to be sure you always have one and of course people become so judgmental when they see a toddler with a pacifier... :( when may LO was toddler I was she had rejected the pacifier, it was something I didn't have to worry about.

  • We use one occasionally (DD is picky on when she will take it), no problems here with nursing.  If you don't want to use one, there are some tips in the No Cry Sleep Solution book to help with stopping the sucking association that babies have for going to sleep.
  • We have used one since day 5 because of her need to suck and no confusion here! As she get older she uses it less and less but it has sure been a lifesaver. :)
  • Our baby was a preemie and the NICU recommended that we give him a pacifier to calm him down, it worked, he was breastfed from day2 and there has not been any confusion, he is teething and now he just chews on his pacifier, we used the soothies as well.Smile

  • Yes!  We used the soothies at first, but I found she really liked the nuk a lot better, so its best to try a few options and don't give up on it.  They may refuse it at first because its something new :-)  Goodluck!
  • nope she doesnt.

i love you, my little mooncake mahal kita
