Re: Strong Earthy boys names

  • I don't like nouns for names. That poor child is destined to hate their name unless they become famous. I'm down with Gabriel, Cyrus and Tobias.

  • I like Gabriel, Leo, and Cyrus.  A gal in my hometown just named their baby Sylus (or maybe it's Sylis...not sure of spelling).

    Or Rock. Tree, maybe?

  • Not a fan of Bear, Cedar, Oak, River, Sun, Moon, or whatever.

Leo and Tobias are kinda cool. I love the name Gabriel.

  • Whatever you pick, I'm sure you'll love!  And don't let people change your minds if you're set on something! I like the idea of an earthy name but I'm not so sure about some of the "tree" names, some of them may just be too distinguishable for people. Sorry to insert a probably unwanted opinion, but if you're considering earthy names, I've always liked Rowan. It's a type of tree/shrub & may be a little less recognized by people (unlike naming them Oak or Cedar).

I actually had a teacher in HS, her first name was Daisy last name Green. She got married and her name was Daisy Green-Mudd. Awful.

I appreciate Soil as a suggestion.

WOW! See people give their kids a name that is cute or unique and is oooohed and awwwed over for right now but they do not translate into good "Grown up names"! I have an uncle named Buck and he has always hated his name!

  • I'm partial to Gabriel, because that's my oldest son's name Wink

We have good friends who named their son August because it's a family name and they have a tradition of naming the firstborn son after their paternal grandfather.  August is the perfect name for this kid - they call him Auggie for short.  I love it!

I'm not a huge fan of Cedar, Cyrus, Tobias or Leyland, but I love the rest.

BAWHAHA!!! Yes it was! He was born in the sixty's though. Grandma thought she was being cute. There apparently was a huge buck out in a field the morning before he was born I don't get it the rest of my aunts and uncles on that side have biblical names. Confused I guess we all get a little crazy close to delivery though...

  • Hey

    Lets be nice here ladies!

These are names that we like. We live on Vancouver Island and are outdoorsy people who don't mind the idea of envisioning a beautiful old strong Oak tree or something of that nature when we think of our son.

  • imageSookieFrackhouse68:

In all seriousness, I like Gabriel. Very nice.

Not a fan of the others. Esp. anything with "bear."

    Bears eat beets.

    Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.

ETA- dammit someone beat me to it.

The earthy names are definitely NMS, but our neighbor named her son Oakley.  And I like that ok...

  • I like:

    Leland

    August

    Leo

They would all grow up with him, some of the others are destined to bring on the side-eye from people.

  • I really like August.  I also know a guy named Wood, although it's family name for him.
  • I really like River...I had it on my list, but DH vetoed it early on. I also like August and Leo.

  • I really would skip "bear" as a middle name.  And Cedar.  River sounds like a girl's name to me...  (probably because I watched Firefly...  I love it as a girl's name.)

I like Leo & Cyrus the best.  Leland sounds a little outdated to me, but that's just me.

  • I live in B.C too, and currently I know a Moss, Cedar, Winter and Sage.

Anyway, I really like August and Leo. I don't mind any of your name choices except 'Bear' as a middle name.

  • River Phoenix died of a heroin overdose.

Joaquin (originally named Leaf) Phoenix is BSC and has a gnarly beard.

    Earthy names kind of suck.

  • My cousin's name is Joshua Barend and they often shorten Barend to Bear for short. Just an idea...

  • I forgot to mention that Forrester is a family name in DHs family.  We've thought about using it as a middle name before.  I really like it.
  • I like August and Leo. I like Cedar, but my client's granddaughter is named that so I think of that for a girl more than a guy.  Love Rowan and we thought about that name.

If you like earthy that's cool, but I think it does bring up a good point about making sure that if your kid ends up being an accountant or something they'll want a name that grows with them.

  • My mom is 1/16 Cherokee and when she was naming us she put one "normal" name and one "indian" name in a hat. Luckily we were all named "normal" names. The indian name she had for my brother was Fox Stone. I've actually met a kid named Stone and he really likes his name so maybe it just depends on the family. I'm pretty sure my brother would have hated Fox Stone though.
