Freezing food help please!

I know how to freeze soups, casseroles, etc.

What do I do if I want to freeze breads and cookies?

  • When I make homemade bread, the recipe makes two loaves and I always freeze one.  I wrap it in saran wrap and then, if I have them, a ziploc (I reuse them over and over, so no waste).  I've never had a problem doing it like this.  The longest I've kept a loaf in the freezer is probably a week, so I don't know how it would work for extended freezing.

  • I just put them in a bag and freeze them then when I defrost them I flip them to the opposite side then how they were frozen.  Like a loaf of bread if it were in the freezer right side up I'd defrost it upside down.  I don't know if it's an old wives tale or what It's just what it do.

    I leave the loaf whole, reduces the risk of the bread drying out.  I slice after I take it out of the freezer and we're ready to eat it.

    this.  but my mom used to make up chocolate chip cookie dough, form it into balls/scoops, then just freeze that.  when she was ready for them, she'd take them out and bake them. 

  • Ball has some freezable plastic containers.  I know... I'm bad...  We use them for purees, though.  BPA free.  I've also used ziplock bags for sauces.

    This is a great idea, never thought of doing that!

    Mmmmmmm....  how did she store them so they didn't freeze all together?  In batch sized packages?  Better question - how'd she actually manage to get the dough in the freezer before she ate it raw?

  • she freezes them on a cookie sheet, then when they're frozen she puts them into freezer size bags.  since they're already frozen, they don't stick.

    and she's always been a stickler for not eating anything with raw eggs- i was never allowed to lick the spoons or eat raw cookie dough.

    Sounds like a deprived childhood.  My mom used to make a batch of cookie dough, stick a bunch of spoons in it and bring it out for slumber parties (yes, I know in hindsight that may not have been the wisest thing... oh well).

    As for the cookie dough freezing - I skip the scooping step and just put it all into a ziploc, mush it flat to fill the bag, and freeze.  Then when I want to use it I peel the bag off and use a sharp knife to cut the dough into squares & bake.  Easy peasy.

    Except that DH and I usually end up breaking the dough off the block, too, and eating that.
