Hand Foot Mouth?

I'm kicking myself in the rear because I see these posts often and I never open them.

Upon picking up DS from daycare today, there was the "A child in this room was found to have HFM disease"

So, now what? What do I need to look for? Anything I should know?

Google is scaring me.

(the daycare had an info packet with the letter but, didn't have extra copies so I have to wait)

Re: Hand Foot Mouth?

  • Usually a decently high fever and then spots/sores on bottom of the feet, palms of his hands, and pray to the heavens he doesn't get the mouth ones. Buy ice cream. Sorry you have to worry about it.

  • He could have spots on his butt too - DS had HFM back-to-back times (which is rare - HFM is like chicken pox in the sense that once they get it, they don't get it again - unless it's a totally different strain. And I was told there are 80+ strains of it. Ugh) and both times, he only got ONE spot, once on his hand and once on his butt and just had a super high fever but was lucky enough to not get the mouth sores. His appetite definitely went down the 4-5 days he was sick though, I'm not sure if his mouth actually hurt or just from not feeling well. I hope it skips your DS!
  • Thank you ladies so much! I'm giving him a full body inspection in the am.
  • When DS had it, it really didn't affect him very much.  He had a few spots on his hands and feet, but he never really had a fever.  I think he did have some mouth sores, which made him reluctant to eat, but overall it was not bad for him.  Unfortunately, I actually caught it from him (even though apparently adults hardly ever get it) and it hit me really hard. Fever wiped me out for 2 days.  Good luck to you that your DS doesn't get it!  But either way, don't let google scare you. :)
  • DD had it... only symptom was fever and spots in her throat. For some reason nothing ever showed up on her hands and feet. Her only problem was that her throat was too sore and she didn't want to drink, and would only eat really soft, smooth, cold foods - applesauce, yogurt, pudding. Pedialyte popsicles were the best! Hopefully LO won't get it, but it is super contagious and once you've had it you don't get it again. DD's cleared up in 5-6days and then she was back to herself. GL!

  • DS had it - he got a pretty high fever (102 I think) for a couple of days, then once the fever died down, he got sores in his mouth. They looked like ulcers. It sucked. He accidentally bashed his face on the front of a shopping cart and they all started bleeding. :( I think he got a couple of very tiny spots on his feet but none on his hands.
  • DD never had a fever or sores or spots on her hands, feet or body. She did however have one huge sore in her mouth.  It was so sad. She couldnt eat or drink. She told me "mouth hurt". She was living on yogurt drinks and ice cream for about a week.

  • Ugh, I had this personally about two months ago. It sucked. It is very very contagious among children, so I know it came from daycare, but my DS lucked out and only had a fever for a day or so and crankiness. I had ulcers in my mouth and throat and wanted to die. I hope it skips you guys!!

  • DD's pedi thinks she just had this. It's going around her daycare, and she all of a sudden refused to eat, but she was acting normal. Then after two days, she started getting fussier and fussier so we took her in. The morning I took her to the doctor, she woke up from her nap with a rash all over her torso, some spots on her hands and some on her feet. They  were slightly raised bumps. The pedi said her throat looked red too. She also had an ear infection (when it rains, it pours!). She was a mess for about a week :( She's just finally starting to get better. And she ate today for the first time in a week.

I hope it skips over your LO!!

  • when dd had this, the first thing we noticed was a high fever. she never got the hand/foot spots but got the painful sores in her mouth. it was awful :( but we got through it. i hope your lo doesn't have it!
  • Alright - thank you. DS woke up with a low grade temp this morning so I am going to monitor him today and call out pedi.
  • Ditto everyone else but don't be scared by google. the range of symptoms is huge & most are pretty mild, sore throat, fever & maybe a few spots. I don't want to say I hope your LO gets sick, but this is a virus that almost all kids are exposed to sometime in the first couple years, so when my kids got it, I thought of it more like, ok, one more thing we've built up immunity to & next time it goes around daycare hopefully we'll be in the clear... of course since they had it mildly it was much easier to view it that way. There are lots of strains of coxsackie but many do not cause the hand/foot type sores so most kids do not get this type more than once.

We all got some strain of throat coxsackie last year which  I will say was MUCH worse than HFM, which I also got when the kids got it 2 months ago so I feel like a coxsackie incubator. Yay, love getting all these crazy childhood illnesses!   I was thankful that I got the HFM worse than the kids did- I actually had some of the blisters on my palms & feet and they were uncomfortable (esp in hot water so I got out of washing dishes for a couple days) but that discomfort only lasted 2 days or so for me. But then they peeled for like 2-3 weeks which was kinda gross.

GL & hopefully LO just has a super mild case & won't ever get it again!!!!!

  • Grace had it. It came and went quickly and they can't give you anything to get rid of it.

  • DD had it and never got any spots...it was just a fever and her pedi diagnosed it because she had a sore in her throat.  He told me, "I don't care if she doesn't eat anything, but make sure that she drinks...her throat might be really sore so she might not want to drink, but do whatever you can do get fluids in her."

And then, I am about 99% sure I got it from her.  I had the absolute worst sore throat I have ever had in my life, was neg for Strep, and my only conclusion was it was HFM because I never had any other symptoms.  It hurt to swallow my own spit and I would wince every time I had to swallow.  Ouch!

  • We just had it for the second time. :(

They always start in the diaper area. They look like red little pin pricks that turn into pimples - like a bad rash. Then they start appearing around the mouth, and then move to the hands and feet.

Sometimes they have a fever with it. The first time Lila ran a moderately high fever for 2-3 days. The second time, she never got a fever and wasn't nearly as sick. But it takes a good 4-5 days for the rash to go away, and they can't go back to daycare as long as they have rash.

    Hope he gets better soon!
