AR and thickening formula?

DS is a 8 week old twin c AR. We are thickening his formula with 1 tbs cereal per ounce. Should I expect to for him to eat less (ounce wise) since he has the added cereal in his formula? He is only tolerating about 3 ounces at a time every 2-3 hours. DD is taking 4-5 ounces every 2-3 hours. Just wondering if you thicken formula how much are you lil ones taking in? I know all babies and their AR is different just trying to get an idea.

Re: AR and thickening formula?

  • I believe so since he will get full faster.  A tbs per ounce seems too much to me. IMO

  • My pedi said to use 1 Tbsp per every 3 oz

For those of you adding the cereal, are you noticing an improvement?

  • I thought the same thing, but that is what the pedi told me and that was what the instruction hand-out from MD office said to do as well. It is thick, but when I tried to lessen the amount of cereal he starting refluxing again. He has been taking it okay and no spits up. But I agree, it is alot.

As a pediatric dietitian, I've worked with a lot of infants who have issues with reflux.  Unfortunately, adding rice cereal to formula isn't an ideal solution.  The thickened formula can be difficult for baby to take and the longer the formula sits with the added cereal, the thicker the consistency gets.  Also, 1 Tbsp of cereal per ounce of formula is extremely thick.  I would expect a baby to have difficulty getting an adequate volume of formula.  Have you considered using a formula Enfamil AR? (By the way, I have no affiliation with any formula company, so this isn't a "pitch").  It has rice cereal already added to the formula powder, but when the formula is mixed, the consistency is like regular formula, and doesn't thicken until it hits the acidic environment of baby's stomach.

If you're not too keen on switching formulas, you could inquire with your pediatrician about medications that can ease reflux symptoms.

  • I was wondering the same thing. My DD GI specialist today had me start adding 1 tsp per oz of formula because of her reflux. I am nervous it is too much but she is the dr. And she is considered one of the best in town. My DD has a milk/soy allergy so she is on Neocate and Prevacid for reflux. She says adding rice is our option. I am worried but don't know another option.
