This is my first and I plan on breastfeeding.I'm getting kind of nervous though because I haven't heard anything from my midwives about breastfeeding classes, lactation consultants, and a hospital tour. Has anyone taken any breastfeeding classes? If so,where? What about meeting with a lactation consultant? Is that something you do before delivery or directly after? If anyone has some info/advice please tell! Thanks!
Re: Lactation consultants/Breastfeeding Classes?
I don't think the midwives talk about that kind of stuff. From what I understand thats why a lot of women also get a doula for that extra help. Have you gone to the La Leche League?

They have local groups, so you can attend meetings and also have someone right there to help. I would recommend contacting them now before you even have the baby.
I would personally also highly recommend asking for a lactation consultant when they move you to your room after you give birth. Even if you don't think you are having issues. I did not and we had latching issue (not doing it properly) It took over a week and very sore nipples for me to figure it out. I would also use your nurses. They are there to help you!!
Birth partners has a breastfeeding course that I heard was good.
You could probably contact the hospital you are delivering at directly to find out about breast feeding classes. Also, definitely ask to meet with a LC in the hopsital. I agree with the pp, even if you don't think you need the help!
I took a class before my first was born, but he could not breastfeed (birth defect) - but I did remember enough when my 2nd was born & with the help from the LC - there was no pain.
Good luck!
Dr. Smiley in stratford i think is a group of lc and they are great. I saw dr. young and highly recommend her! i went after ds was born because i was having some pain. i took a bf class at yale new haven and saw a lc in my room after birth.
hth good luck
I would also check with the hospital you will be delivering at for classes offered - I'm going to deliver at Yale New Haven and they have breastfeeding classes for couples as well as the typical childbirth prep, etc. I'm expecting in April and will be taking the breastfeeding class in March.
I would also definitely check out La Leche League - you can start going now just to get information about it and they also have a book you can probably check out from your library called The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding that provides a lot of information as well.
