Babies: 9 - 12 Months

At what age can they sleep with a blanket?

DS sleeps/naps so much better when he has his blanket but, being the worry-wart that I am, I always pull the blanket off after he falls asleep.

When (if at all yet) did you start letting your baby sleep with a light blankie?  Was it a certain age?  Or specific motor skills that made you feel comfortable about it?  Or am I crazy to think that this is even an option on the horizon?

 Thanks.

  • IMO once they can roll over and/or move around they are safe.

  • I also felt comfortable leaving the blanket in there with her once she started rolling over.
  • I was like you and I waited until 8 months....at least it was during the summer.  If it makes you more comfortable, you can just tuck in the blanket from a little above the waist down.  That way her arms won't get tangled.

  • She's been sleeping with a blanket and stuffed animals since probably 6 months.

  • DS has slept with his blanket for almost 3 months now. Once he could roll all over his crib I figured he wasn't going to get stuck in the blanket.

  • we gave her a tiny triple crocheted blankie (12x12) at about 4 mo when she could roll both ways.

She now has a bigger crocheted blankie in there that she snuggles with. I'm still not comfortable with a non-crocheted one, but this is fine for now.

I think it just depends on what you are comfortable with

  • We started blankets when it started getting cold here- so October. My LO sleeps with 2 blankets since it gets cold here. But I don't worry about it, he also sleeps on his tummy.
  • I let him have a blanket now but a tuck a corner under the mattress by his feet, I figure this will keep it from going over his head.

  • DD slept with a sleepsack till 4 mo's.  After that we used a crochet blanket that we tucked under her sides.  I didn't worry because it has holes in it.  She can breathe through the blanket. We also have a video monitor. If the blanket was over her face we'd go in and move it back down.

  • It's recommended not to all any loose blankets in the crib until LO is at least 1 year old, and regardless of motor skills.  My first son slept in Halo Sleepsacks until he was over 2 years old, and that's my plan with DS2 as well.  I find them to just be more practical: they keep him warm all night because they can't get kicked or rolled off, and don't pose a SIDS or suffocation risk.
