Babies: 3 - 6 Months

omg, he wakes every 45 minutes!

anyone know anything about this? I haven't tried sleep training but this us unacceptable. he's not hungry but 1 of the 12-15 wake ups. I will do anything, I'm going insane. he's 4 months & 10 days old. we've also recently experienced 4 month wakeful which WAS waking a few more times, and we are pretty aware of his teething signals which he isn't displaying during these new 45 minute insanity sessions.

  • Is he cold?  Diaper too tight? What do you do when he wakes?  Do you pick him up?  Is he crying or just awake?
  • We've had a ton of posts about this, so I'm sorry to those that have already read me respond with this, but we had great results from the magic sleep suit. ( magicsleepsuit.com )  He never liked to be swaddled, but was being HORRIBLE at night- just like your LO.  The first night we used the suit he went from waking every hour the night before to only waking twice.  We are going through a 2nd tooth being cut right now, so he's not doing well, but I'm confident that in another day or so, he'll get back on track with the sleep suit.  They have a 30 day return policy if you're not finding good results.  An excellent use of $40 in my opinion.  I have seen posts on here from girls that say it did not work for them, so it won't work for everyone, but I've also seen a lot of great, positive responses as well.

  • I am having the same problem - my LO goes down just fine, but isn't sleeping soundly at all. He constantly wakes up. His new thing is rolling to his back/side against the bumper and just screaming. UGH. We are exhausted. I think we need to sleep train. I see no other way to fix it...as we have tried everything...putting the binkie back in, changing the diaper, feeding him, rocking him, etc. He inevitably always wakes RIGHT back up. I'm sorry you are dealing with it...the sleep deprivation is the worst. Good luck!

  • Sorry to hear you are having such a rough time.

Do you have a white noise machine?  Some sort of light projection so he has something to look at if he wakes up?  Is he swaddled/not swaddled?  Have you tried a sleep sack?  Some people get good results from a sleep sack with a blanket wrapped swaddle-tight around the torso (the pressure makes them feel secure).  Have you thought about getting a wubbanub or something similar (K can almost always get hers back in her mouth without assistance - don't let her have it at night unsupervised but if she was waking every 45 minutes, I would).

    Good luck...

  • My DD recently went through a period of frequent waking without being hungry.  We've been playing white noise (with the free white noise lite app) and she's back to sleeping better again.  Hope tonight is better for you!

This was us, too.  The magic sleep suit makes them lay on their back. I've seen DS try to roll to his side and it won't let them!

  • DD#1 went through this, from 4-6 months.  After 2 months of NO sleep DH and I were zombies.  We finally let her cry at 6 months.  It took 3 nights (only one night did she cry for very long) and she was sleeping all night.  And she has ever since (except for when she is sick, so now when she wakes up I know something is wrong).  In retrospect, I don't know why we waited so long.  She literally had no idea how to put herself back to sleep, so every time she would go through a sleep cycle, she'd need our help going back to sleep. We had done it to her, with sleep associations like holding her and rocking her until she was asleep.  Why wouldn't she want us to recreate that environment for her every time she woke up?

A baby who wakes every 45 minutes all night long is not getting uninterrupted sleep and it is very detrimental in the long run.  They are much more cranky, irritable and slow to learn new things.  Sleep is extremely important.  A couple of nights of crying is not as harmful as long term sleep deprivation.  Once DD#1 started sleeping better, she was happier and more alert.
