S/O early BLW foods

If I made some rice and made it pretty sticky and formed it into balls/fingers, would that be good for DS to get started?  I'm not sure how cereals work with BLW, and I can't give him regular wheat bread for grain.  If I made is soft/sticky enough it would be ok, right?  We're still a few weeks out, but I'm looking for ideas.

  • I think you can give him anything that he won't choke on or that is high allergy if you have a family history.  I don't think you have to worry about the nutrition part of it as much at this point since the nutrition should be coming from bm or formula.  And the foods is just for flavor and texture and learning.

  • I skipped cereal all together. I have done in this order banana, avocado, baked apple (huge hit),green beans, banana flavored mums, oatmeal (hates), cinnamon on the apple and oatmeal and this week sweet potatoe fries( loves!). Oh to answer your question I personally wouldn't do rice like that yet. When I did oatmeal I made it from scratch and blended it before making and since the oats weren't completely ground up he kept coughing and had a hard time. You don't have to start with cereal especially if you are waiting till 6 months.

  • i think you`re really just asking how to get some grains into him without wheat, not about cereal, right? i would think sticky rice balls would do the trick. once you`re well into it and he`s learned how to dip a spoon or a veggie into something, you could mix it up by giving him rice cereal then. also, i know i`ve seen gluten-free bread, and dairy-free bread, but i don`t know if you can find both in one loaf. our grocery store has them in the freezer section. hth :)
  • also! i just got this cookbook that has a bunch of vegan [ie dairy- and egg-free] and wheat- and/or gluten-free recipes. it`s not exactly blw-friendly [she doesn`t have you start finger foods til 9 months, for example], but most of the stuff is pretty easy to make and would be good for now and later. she also shows you how to turn whatever you`re making for the baby into dinner for the whole family so you don`t have to make 2 meals [like mashed squash for the baby, squash soup for the grownups, stuff like that]. it`s called `the petit appetit cookbook`, lisa barnes.

I've found rice bread that's allergy-friendly, but it's dense, and I'm not comfortable with him having that. I'll def try oatmeal, though. My friend has a daughter who's 2 months older than C ad they go to the same pedi; she told me he stressed the importance of cereals, so I'm trying to read up on grain alternatives so I can back up my decision when I talk to the pedi about BLW, KWIM?

  • In the book they recommend starting with short grain rice like sushi or risotto because they're stickier and easy to grab in handfuls.  Rice balls are actually listed as an easy first finger food :)
