Babies: 3 - 6 Months

BF and FF

So - just curious how many people do a bottle of Formula or a bottle of 1/2 BM 1/2 formula for their LO at night time?  I've always heard FF babies sleep better - and I wonder if BFing during the daytime, but adding a little Formula to his nighttime bottle (I already pump the last feeding and give it to him in a bottle) might help with his sleeping.  I am getting desparately sleep deprived and not dealing well with it.

He got up at 4 AM today..it took 30 minutes to get back to sleep...he slept an hour and got up at 5:30 AM for the day.  He stayed up until 8:30 and slept until 9:15.  My kid THRIVES on his schedule and we are all screwed up today and I have no idea how to fix it.

He usually gets up at 7:30 eats, up for 2 hours, sleeps an hour and then repeat.  He went to bed a little late last night and got up early. I know he hasn't gotten enough sleep but he won't go back down.  I am at a loss and I definitely feel like I am clinging to the end of my rope today.  Oh yeah - I watch 2 other kids so I can't just chill with him and nap when he does....

  • I breastfeed but have low supply and have to supplement with formula.

We breastfeed at bedtime, then he gets a 3 oz bottle.  If I've pumped enough, I give him breastmilk, if not, formula.  There is never a difference in how long he sleeps, formula or breastmilk.  That's just my experience.

  • We EBF when DS first starting sleeping better... it was just before 4 months... but we had Ferbered at exactly 4 months old.  DS was up every 1-2 hours at night for a week straight before I felt like I was going to pull my hair out.  We were rocking him to sleep and putting him down in the crib asleep and it would take around 30 minutes sometimes and an hour at other times... it was awful - I literally spent half the day rocking him to sleep and he would them sleep for like 40 minutes.  I did a lot of research on ferber and that worked for us.

When DS is overtired - we get him down to sleep asap.  I try not to rock or use any other techniques to get him to sleep - just put him in his crib.  Or if we are out, we put him in his car seat and he usually passes out during the drive home.  At that point, he'll usually cry for a few minutes and then get himself to sleep.  We avoid this at all costs.  It is such a pain to have him be overtired.  I've been tracking his sleep schedule and going off of that and I put him down at the first signs of tiredness.

Another note:  We just started weaning him to FF and I haven't noticed any difference in his sleep patterns (he has only one BF session now).  I've heard that FF babies sleep better too, but it doesn't seem to be the case here.

  • since i started relactating we still supplement her last bottle (and if she gets up at night) with formula. i either nurse or pump and feed her breastmilk throughout the day.  when my supply dried up for no apparent reason we found out quickly that Samantha slept better on formula. (dont know how true the sleeping on formula rule is) but it worked for us.

my pedi told me at samanthas 2 month appointment when shes overtired its okay to let her cry (no more then 5 mins check make sure everything is fine diaper, feeding, snuggles)my daughter normally falls asleep within 15 mins. (shorter if she just gives in quicker) because when she is overtired she is like the devil and will stay awake even more. i can tell the difference between im tired  and im really tired and i need to go to sleep.

i have read no books or anything like that on sleep methods. im going from personal experience, my mom, husband and pedi.

We based our schedule on this book: https://www.amazon.com/Twelve-Hours-Sleep-Weeks-Old/dp/B001I46S9O/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1288624672&sr=1-2

DD literally slept 12.5 hrs last night and she's EBF.

When she's overtired, she has a specific hold that will put her to sleep.

  • Thanks for the advice ladies.  I am going to get some sort of sleep book this afternoon. I'm going to the library and to the bookstore. I may take back the ones I don't use, but I at least want to look at some indepth before I decide what method to use.  We tried Babywise...I don't know if I didn't follow it strictly enough but it has not helped.  He's not sleeping as well as he should be.  I understand he'll have random bad days/night but it seems like we have 1 or 2 good days followed by 4-5 bad days and I think it should be the opposite.  I just want to do what is best for him but I'm so confused at how to do that right now. I think I'm just too exhausted to know what to do!

  • We did this a little while ago, but stopped because the formula didn't sit well with DS.  Whether or not he will sleep longer is up for debate.  Formula takes longer to digest, so he may sleep longer.  But his internal clock could make him wake up no matter what or he could just be really hungry.  Why don't you try to add an extra ounce at his bedtime bottle?  We found this helped DS to sleep longer.  The more calories he got during the day, the less he would wake and stir at night.  It takes a few days for him to realize the difference, but I would say after about three days his system started to realize it didn't need to wake up so often.  And by a week, his sleep was definitely improved.  He sleeps about 9 hours at night now.
