Cervix Question

Hey Everyone,

At our ultrasound last week I was told my cervix is measuring too short (2.9cm, doc said he never wants to see anything less than 3.5cm).  I go back tomorrow to get measured again, but I am so scared.  He said he doesn't usually like to put in a stitch this late in the game (21 weeks), and that bedrest may be my only option.  I've also been having contractions but he said they are just braxton hicks and totally normal.  Anyone else's cervix measuring short?  Anyone know of any possible things I can bring up to him to help (ie progesterone shots, etc)?

Re: Cervix Question

  • I don't know the answers to your questions, but just wanted to say I'll keep you in my thoughts so you don't have to have bedrest. I know it's not want you want to hear, but that is pretty short. At about 21 weeks mine was still a little over 5cm.

  • Hi there. I see a high risk specialist because I'm carrying twins and they have been checking my cervix every two weeks since 16 weeks.

So far mine is long but I wanted to tell you that my doctor thinks that anything above 2.5 cm is ok and 3 or over is completely normal. Your doctor saying he never wants anything less than 3.5 is extreme and not the norm (based on the measurements the other ladies on the multiples board etc get on a regular basis)  As far as I know, there isn't anything you can do to make it longer. The standard protocol at my doctor's office is once you hit 2.5 you have to go on bedrest.

It is possible that you will get a better measurement on Monday. It is hard to be exact with the measurements, which could have resulted in a measurement that is lower than it really is. You may also want to see a high risk specialist (MFM) from now on just to make sure you are getting proper monitoring.

I'm so sorry that this happened but it is really, really good that they caught it early so you can avoid it shortening more by going on bedrest if necessary. Good luck.

  • I am a high risk pregnancy and I get lengths done every week now. I got my stitch put in at 12 weeks and now I am 20. I also get the shots every week. I was told by my doctor however that the purpose of the stitch and the shots are totally different. The shot keeps you from going into labor because it keeps your uterus calm. The stitch actually serves the purpose of keeping your cervix from opening prematurely (incompetent cervix). Which was what happened to me with my first pregnancy.

I was also extremely concerned on my last length but I am going to stay in constant prayer, and I will add you to my prayer list. I wish you the best in whatever you or your doctor decide.

Also in addition I have been seeing a high risk doctor since the begining of my pregnancy and they said they are most concerned when your length gets below 2cm.
