If I meet someone and they say their name is X, then I call them by X. People take their cues from the parents and, to me, Tillie is not an automatic nick name. My daughter's name is Emmeline, and that's what she's called....not Em, not Emme, and those are more automatic nick names.

You are right; I agree that there is a degree to which parents can control (for lack of a better word) the name or nickname their child goes by. As an example, my husband's name is David, and he has never really gone by Dave. When he was little, if someone would call him Dave, his mom would add "-id."
On the other hand, my daughter's name is Georgia, and some of the teachers in her daycare affectionately call her "Peach" (obviously not a nickname I thought of when we named her!). I think it's cute and it doesn't bother me, but they also don't call her that all the time so I'm not too worried about it sticking. But people who are around your child when you're not (school friends, teachers, etc.) will probably end up shortening his/her name. I guess the question is whether it sticks or not, and whether you (not you specifically, but the generic you) can live with it if it does!...
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him,and He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6
