XP: Non clicky poll about where you live

Where we live now is suburban.  Good mix of people.

Would you consider where you live rural, suburban, or city?

I could never live in a city, live in suburbia now, but might be moving to the country and I'm trying to figure out if my fears are valid.

H is looking into a new job which would move us to a very rural area.  I'm afraid of how closed-minded rural people can be.  We also don't go to church.  DH just doesn't care, and I am atheist.  I'm afraid of how we'll be treated because of that.  I know these fears could be totally unfounded, but I went to college near this place so I've had some interaction with the locals.

Re: XP: Non clicky poll about where you live

  • I live in suburbia now, but grew up in a very rural environment (no stoplights, 1 grocery store, no fast food places etc). It definitely was small town mentality for much of the residents, and a majority of the town went to the same church that was very cliqueish.

However I don't think that because you live in a rural area means that you will grow up with the "small town mentality". A lot of it is how you raise your kids. My parents took us to the city often and to museums, plays etc and taught us to be open to different people/ideas etc. They also didn't push church on us and just allowed us to figure that out for ourselves.

  • Well, I would say we currently live in urban-suburbia. If that makes sense.?

We are looking to move to DH's home town, which is bible-belt RURAL. As in, the city limit sign literally says "This is God's country. Welcome to xx, where Jesus is Lord."

Don't worry, we will be raising our kids with open minds, and visiting the city often :)?

  • I live in a rural area. Our town has about 14,000, but I live about a mile outside of town. Our closest neighbor is 1/2 mile away. I kind of like it, we've only lived here for a little over a year. I agree with misscharlotte, the town is kind of cliquey and a lot of what goes on does center around church, but you can easily find your place without having to be apart of any congregation or anything.

One thing I love about being in a more rural area is that we have a ton of room for the girls to play. We live on a horse farm, so there is a lot of room anyway, but the room that the girls have for a swing set and their toys is a lot more than what we'd have just living a mile closer and in town.

  • We technically live in a suburb but it's really close to the city (although Columbus is like "city light" haha). This is tough. I am a non-believer also. I try to avoid saying "atheist" because it seems to elicit such a strong reaction, like it sounds so confrontational and negative, even though it shouldn't (a-theist). Personally, I could never live in a rural area. I love being close to things and hate commuting of any sort. Does your H share your concerns about small town mentality?
    no
  • Oh, and what is rural? Do you know a general idea of where you may be? I lived in VA my whole life (until about 6 months ago) and rural VA is VASTLY different from rural AR, if you know what I mean...

  • I live in the country. I like it a lot better than the city because I feel like I have more privacy. It is very quiet where I live. I think it's perfect for our little family. There was just too much going on in the city.

  • Totally depends on the rural area. Some are close minded, some aren't.

  • I will add I could personally never live in a rural area. I would miss the culture (museums/shows) and things to do. I think I would lose my mind.

But different strokes for different folks.

  • I live in a city wait no suburbia? Ugh CA is kind of weird I would say we have big well known cities but not much rural areas in CA so I guess technically I am in the suburbs of Los Angeles. I would love to live in a rural area but I would probably have to move out of state to do so.
  • I live in the suburbs 20 minutes outside of Manhattan. It is the best of both worlds.

Oooooh, I'd do it. DH and I LOVE that area, and go as often as we can! And its not too terribly far from Front Royal/Harrisonburg...even not that far from DC!

  • We live in a rural area in a small town. Lived here for 6 years now and love it. Its quiet but still has cultural activities close by especially in the summer. It can be a little cliquy with the over 50 crowed but for the most part you can do your own thing and still be accepted.
