2nd Trimester

This is going to be harder than I thought (pet related)

Jack saw one of Ellie's toys last night. He literally spent an hour sitting at my feet crying and doing his "pretty please" dance.

I know there is going to be some confusion when she's here and there are toys out all the time. There will be some spit swapping between her and the dogs. I just don't want her stuff getting really torn up by the dogs.

He wasn't willing to let it go though. This may be tough.

  • Our dog was ruining DD's toys too so we decided to buy our dog her own plastic toys that contain treats.  She is better now and focused on her own toys now.  She isn't perfect and we will occasionally still find one of DD's toys chewed on but it has gotten better.

  • My dog also likes LO's toys, mostly the stuffed animals. He just chewed off a toy baseball bat that was new.

I have given the dog his own stuffed bear that he knows his his, but yeah pretty much all spit swapping is impossible.

I have caught LO chewing on dogs bones before....yummy:)

  • our dog never ate ds's toys.

    Diapers?  yes. and EW

It was funny because when I got toys out to play with alex my dog would always go to his toy box and get his toys and bring me.

haha. Now alex is old enough to play with our dog and they are best buddies. They just got a new big backyard and are always out there!!

My dogs like the bathroom trash so I worry about this. Tongue Tied

Jack is the only one that really plays with things and he loves the plush stuff so I think we'll only have to worry about dolls and stuffed animals.

  • One of our dogs has torn up 2 of DS' stuffed toys. She was VERY sternly reprimanded and now knows that we mean it when we say NO or tell her to drop it. Hopefully your dogs will respect E's stuff!

Coal used to leave everything alone. But since alex is getting older and requiring more of our time, he is acting out more. We could leave a whole pile of food on the coffee table and he wouldn't touch it, now he eats stuff out of alex's hand, and yes...eats all kinds of bathroom trash. BARF.

I try to give him more attention. He's also getting older too. But overall, good dog. He's been very good with alex. In fact if alex cries, coal will start crying too. Its pretty funny!!! Doggies get funny with babies and kiddo's. I think you'll have fun!

yeah, just hid the things that squeek! haha

  • It's actually pretty easy to teach your dog to differentiate btwn his toys and baby toys, we've already started to do that but what I would worry about is if he's going to directly compete with your DD for the toy, i.e try to take if from her or act out if he thinks he should have it instead of her.

Yes, that is the worst! I ended up putting our bathroom garbage under the sink and make sure to put any dirty diaper in the garbage as soon as I am done changing it. Super gross and hard to clean up because most disposable diapers have those gel beads and they get spread everywhere if the dog gets into it. It only took a couple of times before I learned my lesson:)

I don't think he would. He's pretty timid and will beg for things (whining and "dancing") but still waits for permission before jumping into our laps or taking food. Obviously this may change with an infant that doesn't talk. Def something we'll have to watch out for.

  • Awww crap, I hadn't thought of this yet.  Totally going to be an issue with Lucy.  She loves to destroy toys.  I am hoping to keep most of the toys consolidated to a single room (and now all the non-first time moms can point and laugh at me) so maybe I can gate it off.
  • We have some 'baby lovies' and have started leaving them around so our dog can get used to the idea that he has toys he can have and can't. He knows all his toys 'by name' though... and can find whichever one you ask for. So far he's been doing good at leaving Sawyer's lovies alone. We have our little baby bouncer chair in the living room too just so he can get used to baby items being around.

He loves little kids and babies, but we've never had a tiny infant around before, or had one that takes away his attention. I ordered 'Baby Makes Four' on Amazon to see if they have any fabulous baby preparing tips for dogs... we will see!

  • we have two bins of toys ready for LO and the dog sneaks in to "nose" them.

She pushes the bouncer, bassinet and the swing, but her favorite is that FP singing learn & play dog...she seems to just "know" they are not hers....b/c she could tear through all of them in 2 min if she wanted to.

    OMG she loves these:

  • We didn't have issues with toys but when we were expecting our first, our dog (named Baby) had some issues. We were standing in the nursery, making plans and talking about the baby's room.. next thing we know, Baby is moving in all of her toys. It didn't take long for her to figure out the room belonged to the tiny human!

  • Our trainer suggested putting a dab of mint mouthwash on baby toys. She said the baby would never notice, but it would be offensive to the dog and he would start to distinguish between baby toys and his toys. I think we're going to have some trouble too because our pup's toys are currently all over the floor, but luckily he's not too much of a chewer so hopefully he won't destroy too much.

  • Is there any way you could get him stuffed animals in a certain color and teach him that those are his? I know it would be a PITA but it may be an option if he doesn't pick up on which toys he shouldn't be chewing.

  • We're working on the "drop it" and "leave it" commands with Freya.  Thankfully apache is not into toys.  We also keep her toys in her own basket and call them by names (hedgehog, wubba, etc..)
