Pedi wants DD to "watch her weight"

Poor girl its starting already! Her daddy and I are not small people so theres no way she would ever be considered small but I feel bad that this has already been talked about at 1 yrs old!

Re: Pedi wants DD to "watch her weight"

  • Time to enroll her in Jenny Craig.  Stick out tongue  Just kidding!  Seriously, unless she's off the chart, I can't believe her doctor would tell you that.  Can you give the pedi a food chart of what she eats, so that they can see what she eats.

  • That seems so strange.  Has she been on the same weight/height curve or has that changed?

Our neighbors were told the same thing and their daughter has a lot of baby rolls but both of her parents are really skinny people and they were both very chubby babies.

  • Yes but only slightly. Shes 27 lbs and the pedi would like her to be around 25lbs. So its not like out of control or anything, I think it was more of a "warning"
  • Wow, that seems early to be making that type of comment.  How much does your DD weigh if you don't mind me asking?

I think he's overreacting.  If she is gaining at a steady pace and has always been 100% + for her weight, I wouldn't worry.  Two of my friends, they are sisters, both had three kids.  Those were the six biggest babies I had ever seen.  Like almost abnormally big.  All 30 + lbs around a year.  They all levelled off and are average size children now.  Some people just grow big babies.

It's awesome that she is so healthy.

  • wow, that's a bit extreme!  DS has always been either 95th percentile or off the charts.  Our pedi just always says that he is nice, healthy, growing baby boy!  Is she walking yet?  If not, her weight gain will start slowing down when she does.  I would not be listening to that advice.
  • I dont' see it as extreme, per se.  Having experienced the flip side to this- weight loss of "only" 3 or 4 pounds - just a couple pounds, you're talking 10% or more of the childs overall weight.

if they are concerned about weight loss, I can understand concern about weight gain too.

I'd rather my doctor state their concern now so that I have it on my radar so that if there IS a problem, I'm not shocked.

And for the record, my pedi too has mentioned concern that DS weighs too much.  At his 2 year appt, we'll see what she has to say at that time.

  • I'll probably get flamed for saying this.....but is your pedi a man or woman?  Whenever we see one of the women in our practice they always express concern over DS weight.  Whenever we see the men they say he is growing right on track with his birth height/weight.

  • Visit before last at the pedi, he said that DS's weight was something to be concerned about, yes.  However, he said he wanted to wait and see still...

DS was measuring 28lbs at his 15mo appt.

Turned out, DS's weight was fine...it just never dropped like the majority of the kids do by 15mo, due to walking more/running more.  Now @ a sick visit at 17mo the weight wasn't even brought up.

No flames to the above poster, but the pedi who was concerned about DS was a man. I don't think it has to do whether a  pedi is M or F.

  • How is her height to weight?  My older daughter has always been between 75th and 90th percentile for height and right about 50th for weight.  My younger has steadily hovered around 70th percentile for both (well, she was 'over 95th" from months 2-8, but on the BF baby chart put out by the WHO she was around 70th even then).  I would be concerned if either height or weight was significantly above the other since that could be an indicator of being over/underweight.

  • Hannah was 28lbs at her 12 mth appt.  She's now around 31 lbs.  Our doctor didn't seem to mind since she's off the charts on everything else (head, height, weight).

Wow I'm so surprised at the responses in here.  Yeah, you can know all the babies who were chubby but thinned out that you want, that doesn't mean that's necessisarily the case for the OP.  I don't get why people just go around telling others to totally disregard what their DOCTOR tells them about the health of their children.  Did you all go to medical school?  Do you know the family medical history and medical history of the child?

Now, OP, my question for you is what do you feed your LO and do you feel weight should be a concern for her?

Personally, my family has a history of weight issues and diabetes.  If my dr. told me to watch what ds eats, I would.  I will actually be asking about it as he has a HUGE appetite and seems to be gaining more since he's started walking instead of slowing down.

I get when people tell posters to disregard what the dr. says when it comes to parenting decisions that don't affect health, but with health issues, well, they are the professionals.

ita, especially if the family has a history of weight related illnesses/conditions that CAN be headed off w/ the right diet early in life.

dd has a big head .. as does her dad, uncle and cousin ... even w/ a family history of big heads, when dd's pedi wanted to do an u/s of her head JUST to make sure everything was ok, we did it b/c we had no idea if it's just a big head or someone far worse.

I'm curious about this also.  As long as she eats a well rounded diet, I don't understand why your pedi would even bring this up.  Some babies are just bigger.   I'm not a doctor but I don't see why it is an issue for a one year old!

  • Her height to weight is shes in the 95th percentile for height and a little off the chart for weight, very slightly off.

Her diet consists  of very healthy food (DH is a nutritionist and we all eat very healthy). She has about 18-24 oz of milk a day and 3 meals.

Like I said Dh and I are not small people and no one in my family is small. I was a very big baby and so was most in my family. Im not super concerned about it, more annoyed the way she said it. (pedi is a female dr)

Also DD goes to "little gym" weekly and gets tons of play time with her cousins.

  • Yikes!! I could understand her concern if you guys were feeding her a processed and not so great diet.  Clearly this is just how your LO's meant to grow (based on you and your DH).  Is the pediatrician aware that your DH is a nutritionist?

Our DD is hovering on the lower side of the chart.  Our pediatrician is very supportive and knows that DD eats healthy, whole foods.  She's not concerned in the slightest.

Did you question her on it?

I completely agree with everything said.  While no doctor is perfect, they are damned if they do and damned if they don't.  They bring up their concerns with weight, parents get angry.  They don't and now the kid continues on the same curve at 5 and is officially obese and the parents are angry no one mentioned it sooner.
