Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Did anyone's baby actually double birth height by age 1?

I asked about tripling birth weight and that seemed pretty common. According to mayoclinic (here), it is also common to double birth height.

Is that even possible? I feel like it has to be an error, but it was also quoted in my most recent Parents magazine.

DS was 21" at birth and is currently 31"

Re: Did anyone's baby actually double birth height by age 1?

  • Ds was 18 inches at birth, and at 12 months he was 29 inches.  He was 4lbs at birth and was 21 lbs at his 12 month appointment also.

  • Wow, that would be a tall 1yr old!

Not here, DS was 21.5" at birth and 32" at 12mo checkup.

  • My shorty barely tripled his birth weight, and not even close on height: he grew a whopping 9 1/2" and was 28 2/4".

He would have had to be nearly 40" tall to double...was anyone's baby 40" at 12 months?

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.
  • Nope....Katie was 20.5" and she is now 29 3/4" at 12 months.
  • Nope. DS was 21" at birth and 30" at one year.
  • Is that even possible?  I don't see how it could be.  DD was 20" at birth and is now 30".  I can't see it being possible to double it.

  • It seems that I read that they should grow about 10".

DD was 21 inches at birth and 28.5 inches at one year. She didn't come close to tripling her birth weight. She actually just barely doubled it. Sad

  • Not quite, but pretty darn close.

He was 18" at birth, and at 1 year he was 32.5"

I don't think so, but thought the magazine would do some fact checking before publishing something like that..

  • i read that in parenting also and it made me scratch my head. DD was 19 inches and at a year she was 30 inches. i can't imagine her being 38 inches. she tripled her birth weight by 10 months.

  • That doesn't seem possible - I don't know any 1 year olds who are that tall!  Kiddo didn't come close to tripling his weight either though.

    He went from 20 to 30 inches and 8lb 6oz to 21lb 9oz.

  • DS was 19.5 inches at birth and 30 inches at 1 year.  I think 10 inches average is more believable.

He did go from 7-14 lbs to 26 lbs.  3.3 times his birth weight.

  • No where near doubling her height. She would be a giant!
  • No way.  20" at birth and 28" now.
  • DS was 10lbs 11 oz and 20 1/4 inches long.  I am dreading to see if he is 32 lbs at 1 year appt.  at 10 months he was 25lbs and 32 inches.  i dont think he will be 40 " at a year.  Who knows.

  • That sounds kind of freaky.  That would mean DS would be 40 inches when he turned 1.  I used to teach kindergarten and the shortest kids in the class were usually around 40 inches tall (at age 5!).  I think DS is around 29-30 inches.

  • No way.  He was 21" at birth and is 30" now.  He almost tripled his birth weight.
  • That's just crazy!  DS was 33" at a year and he towers over all the other babies.  I can't imagine him at over 40"!

  • No! Not even close.

    Birth: 6 lb 11 oz, 21"

    12 Month: 22 lb, 32"

  • DS was also 21" at birth and is now 32" I can't imagine him being 42". That's crazy.

  • Uh no...she didn't triple her birth weight either.  She was born 9lbs 8.9oz and she is 18lbs 1oz.  She was 20.5 inches tall and we haven't checked her height in a while but I'd guess she is about 28 inches tall.

  • The only "double height" thing I've ever heard was double their height at 2 to get their eventual height. It was spot on for me.

  • No. DS was 19 1/2' at birth and is only 30'
  • That does seem strange.  DS was 19" at birth and I think 30" at 1 year of age.  He's about 34" now and he'll be 2 in a couple of weeks.

  • That doesn't sound right to me at all.  My older daughter was 90th percentile for height at her 3rd year well check and is 39.5 inches, just over double her birth height (she was 19 1/4 inches at birth).  So I would guess the magazine meant double birth height by 3, not 1.  39.5 inches would be way off the charts tall at 12 months (I have people who are shocked looking at her that she's only 3 because she's so tall... no way a 12 month old could be that tall), and it's not like 19 1/4 inches is particularly long at birth.

  • That has to be an error! I could only see that happening if it's a preemie who starts out really small (e.g. my friend's son was 12.5" at 26w2d). My boys were 20" and 19.75" at birth and at age 1 they were each about 29".

  • Nope.  DS was 20.5" at birth and 30" at his 1 year well visit.

  • Oh, they did triple their birth weights though.

Will went from 6.10 to 21.7, and Alex went from 6.7 to 23.0.

  • Umm... no I've never heard of a 41 inch 1 year old! DD was 20.5 inches at birth. I think its age 2? There's no way that's right.
  • when dd was born she was 20.5" and 8lbs, 3 ozs

at 1 she was 32" and 23 pounds

  • That seems a bit absurd to me.  DD is going to be TWO years old next month, and still isn't double her birth height.  According to her Ped. she's in the 75% too, so something must be off with that statistic.

  • I've seen that before too and thought it was insane. DD, thankfully, was not even close. She was 22 in at birth and 31.5 in at 12 mo. She didn't triple her birth weight either, but she came pretty close.

  • that's obviously an error.  check out the cdc growth charts and you will see that even a 95% baby is only around 30 in tall.  perhaps he meant 150% of birth height???
  • wow, that sounds crazy! DD1 hasn't even doubled her birth height at 2.5....and she's in the 95th+% for height.

  • that seems ridiculous. J was 19.5 inches at birth. he was 28.75 at 1 year.
  • Nope!

DS grew almost 10 inches, however. Birth height was 21.5 inches and at 12 months was 31.25 inches.

Weight went from 9 lb to 25 lb 8 oz.  He did nearly double birth weight by 4 months, however, at 17 lb 12 oz.
