School-Aged Children

DD not doing classwork.

For the third day in a row, my daughter has just not done her classwork at school. She's not disrupting class or talking, she's just staring off into space or going REALLY SLOW.

Now, a little background is that she has issues with paying attention and we're having her tested for ADD in December. She's a late reader and doesn't have a ton of confidence when it comes to writing, spelling and reading, but she CAN do it. She brought home the work each day and had no issue with doing it. She just doesn't seem to get it done in class. Part of it may be that she's young for 1st grade and just doesn't really get it yet. She has a summer birthday and most of her classmates are Fall birthdays. She goes to a very tough private school and we actually tried to hold her back when she started in 4k, but they said she would be bored...blah blah blah.

Anyway, how do I get her to understand it's not a choice? Her teacher had a talk with her today, after she spent 50 minutes doing two-three sheets, and she went with the whole "it hurts my feelings when you don't do what I ask". I spoke to her when she got home and told her that school is her job. Just like Daddy is a lawyer and goes to work each day, she goes to school and has to learn. I told her he got paid in money and her paycheck came in the form of learning and special priviledges like Fall Festival and getting to go have playdates, etc.

I'm not sure what else to do or day. This is a new thing, but it obviously can't keep happening. TIA

Re: DD not doing classwork.

  • Have you noticed any issues with her vision?  I would first get her vision checked to make sure it's fine.  Maybe she needs a reading tutor to help her feel more confident in her reading, to catch her up to her classmates reading level.  My daughter was in first grade last year and seemed to be a bit behind on reading compared to her classmates so I had her tutored twice a week after school with the teacher all last school year and it helped a lot.   She's in second grade now and is much more confident in her reading.

  • We are actually working with a reading tutor at her school once a week, so hopefully that will help. She got a good note sent home today and that made her very happy, so maybe she just needs some positive reinforcement to get her moving in the right direction. She did tell me that it bothers her because during activity time {when they do the worksheets} is also when their main teacher does her reading group, so they can't ask questions until the end. So I think she is getting stuck and wanting to ask for help and then drifts off into lalaland. Fingers crossed that she keeps on this path. Her face lit up when she showed me the good note.
