Bactrim, mastitis, and nursing

I have mastitis and I have been placed in Bactrim for the next 10 days. I'm allergic to penicillin, so I could have the shot to speed the process. The PA told me to pump and dump that side and not to nurse. I understand the not nursing but why can my baby not eat the milk? It does not seem right to me. If he can nursing and drink the left side why not? Any one who has been here your advice or what you went through could be so helpful. Thank you.

Are you sure the PA only said not to nurse on one side? With mastitis you should breastfeed often on the affected side to keep it as empty as possible and babies are more efficient than a pump at getting milk moving. It definitely doesn't make sense to pump and dump but continue to feed on the other side unless baby just won't nurse of the infected side. But I'm obviously not a health professional and i would say listen to your PA's instructions for safety..

  • My dr. told me that baby may reject the milk because the infection can change the taste but to try and nurse on the affected side as much as possible. I would ask your dr. their reasoning behind it
  • I had mastitis and an abscess that lasted from July through early October with DD1. I was on constant antibiotics and painkillers. I was never told to pump and dump (my breast surgeon wanted me to wean due to the abscess, but I didn't).

I was on bactrim at least twice during that time.
