I think it's very pretty! I don't think it's a little girl name at all.
I have suggested it to DH, but we decided to avoid because we KNOW we'll end up calling her Mattie and that puts her in the category of all the Maddies out there, but with a spelling to clarify and people assuming she's a Madeleine or Madison. But this is because we're chronic, unstoppable nicknamers and DH would never go for Tillie as an alternate!

I thought about that too! I would want to avoid Mattie for the same reasons as you and Tillie -- no way. So with Matilda we would have to avoid nicknames altogether.

Personally, I think trying to avoid nicknames with an easily nicknameable three syllable name is just asking for trouble. You really need to like the nickname if it's a common, easy one. There are going to be Maddies in her class and she may very well want to be one too. You seriously run the risk of being in the corner with all the Michael moms grumbling about how nobody will use the beautiful name you gave your child.
I love the name, personally. But, from your tone and the issues you raised, it doesn't sound like its the name for you. Move on. You'll find something you like better.
omg my baby is named Georgia too...that name is making a serious comeback! I think you like old fashioned names like Georgia but I dunno about Matilda, it sounds severe, kind of militant and authoritative.
IMO, Matilda sounds appropriate in early childhood and in adulthood, but I have a feeling it could cause some problems during the tween and teen years.
Honestly, if you're having reservations about the name Matilda already, I'd say find another name.
I like it and would lean toward the first thought. I think, like a lot of "old-fashioned" names (Evelyn, Eleanor) it's becoming more common, but not too popular. I doubt she'll go her whole life without meeting another Matilda. So I'd say go for it.

Hmm, this is a good point. I can definitely see people wanting to shorten it, although we are not really "nicknamers" ourselves. That is something to think about.
Re: What do you think of this name?
all I can think about is the movie...
i would say pass. /:
I like Matilda, so I see both of these categories working nicely together.

It's ok, but I don't love it.
It always reminds me of Morticia from The Addams Family for some reason.

I just want to give you a world as beautiful as you are to me.

I like it, but I don't love it.
FWIW, I think #1 and #2 are both true. I see it as old-fashioned yet unusual (but not weird).

It reminds me of that song, too. But for some reason that is a positive association for me and makes me like the name more.
