How many oz do you freeze at a time?

I've been averaging about 2 oz when I pump, which I know is not a huge amount, & so far that's what I've been putting in the freezer bags.  I know I can put 2 days milk in together.  As DD gets older, she'll be drinking more so I wonder if it's beneficial to start making the bags a little fuller.  Opinions?

Re: How many oz do you freeze at a time?

  • Do a couple weeks supply of 2oz and then maybe up it when you notice your milk production increases. When my DD turned 6 weeks and was eating 3-4oz I was freezing 3-4oz bags. Now I pump about 4-6oz at a time and break them down into 4oz each. It feels like you're throwing away liquid gold when you dump unfinished BM, so freezing smaller amounts is wise because you can always get more milk from the freezer if needed. Good luck and congrats on BF!

  • Stick with 2-3 oz bags for now.  Maybe next month ramp up to 4.   It's actually nice when I'm defrosting bottles for daycare to have a mixture.  For instance, I might defrost a 4 oz and a 6 oz to get 10.

At this point, I do mostly 4-6 oz bags.

  • In the first 5-6 weeks, I would do like half 2oz and half 3oz. We just switched her to 4ozs bottles on Monday (3 months old), from about 6 weeks until now I was doing all 3ozs bottles. This week we've been rotating out all of the frozen, smaller bottles (but keeping a couple 2ozs for any "snack" needs), then we'll start sending and freezing all 4oz bottles.

  • I started freezing in 4 oz increments but then switched to 6 oz to use less bags.

Corin has been taking 4 oz/bottle for a long time now so I defrost 6 oz and pour it into 2 or 3 bottles and top up with fresh.  Since I know he'll drink all of it at some point during the day there's no need to worry that it won't get used in time.

  • It ranged from 1-4 oz.
  • I did at least 4oz and at most 8oz, but on average 6oz. 2oz isn't bad though b/c once you start food, you can thaw it and add it to cereal or oatmeal!
  • I was getting about 4-6 oz per pump session when I was doing it 2-3 times a day. Then I got lazy and only fed LO and would sporadically pump. Now Im regretting that... so Im trying to boost up my supply again so I can freeze more... Anyways...

I was putting 4 oz bags away. Now that I cant get 4oz at one sitting Ive been pumping about 2oz set it in the fridge until my next pumping and then add the next 2oz and then throw it in the freezer. I try to keep it to 4oz because thats how much LO seems to eat at a feeding. then Im not wasting milk or letting it sit in the fridge for a while. You could always try and do 4oz bags and then make 2 bottles... hth
