Clicky Poll: Music During Labor

Coming over from December/3rd Tri to ask a question of you all. I know I would like to have music available to play when I'm in labor, but I'm having a hard time envisioning what type of music would be most helpful or motivating.

What type of music did you find most helpful during labor?

Re: Clicky Poll: Music During Labor

  • I had my iPod with speakers and every song we own on it.

We never even turned it on during labor. My DH asked if I wanted music, and I said no way. That being said, music during early labor, I would just pick my favorite artist regardless of tempo.

We did enjoy relaxing background music for the few days spent in the hospital.

  • When I'm concentrating I don't like ANY background noise, so I didn't take any music. I really didn't even have the tv on in the hospital at all, even after labor. It annoys me most of the time.

  • I tried different kinds of music while in labor.  In the beginning, I was listening to 90's grunge (ie: Bush, Nirvana), then as my contractions got worse that music became very annoying.  I had to change it to a light mix (ie: Rascal Flatts, Billy Joel).  Near the end, after the transition period, I just couldn't listen to music anymore.  I was in such pain, I had to focus on a picture I brought from home and nothing else as I breathed.

So, I would take a variety.  You never know how you will react at the time.

    GL!  :)

  • In the beginning I used nature sounds--rain and ocean waves were particularly relaxing and not obtrusive. After things got more intense, though, any sort of noise irritated me.

  • On my iPod "labor mix" I had Built To Spill, A Tribe Called Quest, My Morning Jacket, Belly, Garbage, The Cardigans (no, not Love Fool ha) etc. She was born to "The Blower's Daughter" by Damien Rice perfectly and randomly enough!

We love Malt Shop Oldies channel on DirecTV, too! :)

  • I preferred complete and total silence. No TV, no music, nothing.

Figured I'd throw my preference in there because I originally thought I'd want R&B/relaxing music (my favorite).

  • We watched movies until the end.  Then everything was turned off.
  • I had relaxing music on, but to be honest I don't really remember it.  I was focused more on breathing.

  • I played a mix, I listened to the soundtrack from Wicked for a while, since I've had it stuck in my head for the past month and it was nice having something else to concentrate on as my contractions got stronger.. I tried playing out the story in my head. While I was actually pushing, we had the Offspring blaring =P

  • I just put my itunes library on shuffle during early labor. When it was time to push, the computer was in the way and was put away and I didn't have any music. I didn't mind though, and I don't think I would've even heard it during pushing-  I was too focused on what I was doing.

  • I couldn't handle any sounds- tv, music, or even DH talking.
  • We turned on one of the music stations on the TV (didn't have a prepared playlist or anything) which was classic rock.  DH and I are both classic rock fans, so it was great for us although I honestly hardly noticed when I was pushing.

  • We watched tv reruns until it was time to push.  DD was born at 3:14am.  I think the tv was on during pushing too, but I don't remember.  Music would have just been annoying.  I wanted to concentrate on getting baby out!
  • I pushed to Ahh Push It by Salt N Pepper. Yes it was ridiculous but the nurses and my doctor were cracking up and totally lighten the mood when I was miserable

  • I made a labor playlist with songs that made me happy, or reminded me of a fun time, that kind of thing.  I used it, but not as much as I thought I would. Nurses kept on coming in to check stuff so I'd have to pause it, and it just seemed to get in the way (I was using earphones).

  • I had a wide variety of music on my ipod but honestly, I never even got it out of my bag.  Things moved very quickly and I was getting an epidural before I knew it.  After the epi I didn't feel a thing and was visiting with family and DH so I never needed to solitude the music would have provided.
  • I was sent straight to the hospital from my 37 week appt to be induced (due to high BP)and forgot cd's and I needed something on during labor, so I was stuck with the MLB playoffs(the hospital's tv stations sucked and we only grabbed blu ray movies).
