My daughter is 5 weeks old and I'm starting to think she may be the gassiest baby alive. Her poor little tummy is always hard and it seems like she is always struggling to poop. My friend's MIL suggested that I give her a bottle of warm water. Has anyone ever heard of this? Anyone tried it?
We've tried gripe water, mylicon drops, rubbing her belly, warm baths, laying her on her belly (which she HATES,) lots of bicycle legs...I'm out of ideas and the warm water is one I hadn't heard before. Thoughts?
Re: Bottle of warm water for gassy tummies
I had a feeling these might be the responses I would get. The person who gave me this advice is VERY old school and I thought it might be an old school remedy.
She is breastfed and I've looked at what I eat and can't seem to find anything that looks to be causing the gas. I'll definitely give the heating pad a try...any other ideas out there? I feel horrible for her...I can tell she is so uncomfortable and I just want to help her
The reason babies should not have water is it fills them up without giving any nutrients.
Have you changed what you eat? Babies can be sensitive to dairy, garlic, onions, as well as many other things.

are you feeding on one or both breasts per feeding?
are you burping often?
are you eating a lot of dairy? or chocolate?
This! Maybe she meant a warm bottle of water against the belly. I have heard of a warm towel against the belly may help.
The nurses told us we could try 1 oz of sterile water. I didn't try it though, the gripe water worked for us.
How is your baby's BM diapers? is the color normal? baby could be getting too much foremilk and that is upsetting her belly. you can usually tell if diapers are green - instead of the seedy or yellow diapers. Also- how many wet diapers in a day? Sometimes hyperlactation can cause gassy babies (too much milk) ... (i am a lactation consultant)
I would also try cutting out dairy for a couple of days to see if that helps. all dairy for a day or two. some BFed babies are VERY irritated by dairy products.
also- i have you tried holding her down against your arm long ways and rocking her. or bouncing her up and down gently of course on your knee either sitting up- or lying her across your lap.
since you said gripe water doesn't work (which is a GREAT product)- i would suggest trying the ingredients separately- My great gram (who is polish) always gave her kids fennel (ingred in gripe water)- you can mix it with a little water and make a 'tea' and give it to baby in a medicine dropper.
Have you tried Colic Calm (gripe water_)?
I would try cutting out the dairy- and only nursing off of one breast and see if you can get baby to totally drain the breast- because it sounds like you could have a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance- foremilk is the sugary milk and if you switch breasts too soon- your baby is getting a lot of foremilk and can upset their tummies- so nursing one side at a time encourages baby to fully drain the breasts while getting plenty of the hindmilk
This is great advice! Her BMs are yellow (mustard yellow actually) and she usually has about 6 a day. She usually has 4-5 wet diapers...maybe more but sometimes her poopy diapers are so heavy I can't tell if they are both
I will definitely try nursing on just one breast and see if that makes a difference. I was doing both just because I was having some supply issues but that seems to have resolved itself now.
We have tried the Little Tummys gripe water as well as colic calm. Is fennel something you can find in a drug store or would I have to order it online?
Thank you all for your responses...this is why I love The Bump
No prob! Gotta love the Bump!
Fennel you can actually very easily find in grocery stores- in the herbs/spices section. A lot of people bake with it- breads/muffins especially. it is a very good digestive aid. dating WAY back to ancient times.
her diapers sound perfectly good. My DD had horrible gas too so I know how frustrating it is. So hard to see them in pain. I would definitely see if nursing one side helps. If not- try cutting the dairy for a bit and see if that works. I swear so much of being a parent is becoming a detective. Once you solve one mystery you will have another! It never ends.
