So... I am trying to put stuff on my registry and I am in need of assistance... Please help! As I have new questions I will be posting them here (at least for the next little while)... so
1. Playmat... do I need one right away? WTF is up with these things being like $50+... what do I look for in this?
2. I need a couple of reasonably priced must-haves... everything i seem to be looking at is super freaking expensive... I am not greedy, I just don't want junk...
More to come... thanks in advance!!
Re: Registry questions thread...
Playmat is optional. You can always use a blanket and some toys on the floor. Most are designed specifically for "tummy time" - to help your baby's neck muscles and to avoid getting a flat spot on the back of their head. They have bright things to look at, try to grab, etc. Might as well put one on your registry if you want, but no, you don't "need" one.
Where are you registering? I found that at BRU, for many categories of stuff, they carried higher-end stuff online than in the stores. So if you go into the store, you may be less overwhelmed by sticker shock.
At the moment I am registering at Sears. I will probably also register at BRU. DH hasn't really been up for registering, so online seemed like the way to go for now. And BRU online hates me and won't let me start a registry for some reason.
3. What about what I need to look for in a pack and play? I don't really think I need the changer feature... but will I miss it? (for example).
I have questions too!!!
I plan to breastfeed, but I get the impression that most women pump too...what is the best set up for this? And does it lead to nipple confusion? I need like a newbies guide info post thing if someone has already mentioned this. But my question is, what bottles to register/buy?
I lurk on the BF board a good bit... I too plan to breast feed. I am thinking I will get the Dr. Brown's bottles with the preemie nipples... I think the important thing is when you introduce the bottle, and what the rate of flow is. I have also heard not to buy too many of any one kind, b/c LO might not take to them.
I can probably help answer some of these questions as 3rd timer...
You don't really NEED any of this stuff, but I'll tell you what features I got and why I did/didn't appreciate them:
Newborn bassinette: LO sleeps in our room for first 10 weeks, so this was just a handy place to put them. Also good to keep out of reach of siblings/pets.
Lullaby/Nature sounds/Nightlight attachment: We travel a lot and this came in so handy to help soothe baby to sleep, or see WTH I was doing in the middle of the night in a strange house/hotel.
Vibrate feature in bassinette: Never really used, and has since broken.
Mobile: Doesn't spin itself -useless.
Changing table: Super handy extra changing table, saves a trip to nursery.
HTH!
I didn't even register for bottles, because people will buy you some anyway and if not, just buy yourself. And buy very very very few of each type! If LO takes to the first one, great, send DH or grandma out for a six pack pronto, but you might have to cycle through a few types to figure out what they really like. Mine both took to Playtex Drop Ins immediately. I hear that Dr Browns are good for sensitive tummies but a PITA to clean.
As far as the nipple confusion, this might be a matter of opinion, but in my experience, give it a good couple of weeks to get BFing down (by both of you), then introduce a bottle between 3 and 4 weeks. Depending on your situation, you may want a pump. I'm a SAHM, and while I had a pump, I never got good results with it so mostly ended up using formula on the rare occasions I left LO.
I am a first-timer so I can't say anything about the usefulness but I bought 2 at a consignment sale: one smaller one for tummy time that I found for $3 and one activity mat (with toys and sounds) for $15. Even if I never use them, I know I didn't waste $50!
Good luck!
