The Rabbit Died

I have never ever heard this before as a term for someone being pregnant... apparently back in the early 1900's, they would inject the pee of a woman into a rabbit, if the rabbit died, then the woman is pregnant...

so glad the ept was invented!! haha

Re: The Rabbit Died

  • LOL, I knew about this and when I called my gma to tell her I was pregnant I said "yaya (that's what we call her) the rabbit died"...her response?  "no ***! That's so exciting"!

ds calls my mom yaya. Its easier to say than grammy and I think it means grandmother in some other language.

It means grandma in Greek (spelled yia yia but still).  My gma lived in Greece for years and when my brother was first learning to speak he started calling her that.   We took it as a sign that he was Greek in another life lol...we all started calling her that.

  • Actually, they killed the rabbit either way - the hGC caused ovarian changes in the rabbits, so they had to kill them to see if there were changes.  Guess the boy bunnies got off easy!

Nope, but my gma lived there for many years and it was something  my little brother started calling her spontaneously.

yeah greek! That's right. Well, we're not that, but it's easy for ds to say and he said it one day to her out of the blue and then we looked it up and it actually meant grandma!  Weird. Maybe ds has some in him somewhere. :)

  • :::butting in::: I learned the rabbit trick many moons ago when there was no proper television shows for children and I was forced to watch MASH reruns.  I actually believed that it was the only way to find out if you were pregnant.  Poor bunnies.
  • I posted "The rabbit died" on facebook as an announcement. It was interesting to see who got it!

That is a good one! It would be too cruel of me to post that, since I do have two rabbits. I could imagine people coming up to me for weeks afterwards "I'm so sorry to hear about your bunny!"
