Cortisone Injection?

Hi all,

Has anyone ever had a cortisone epidural for back pain? I have an appointment with an orthopedist on Monday and it has been suggested to me by his office that they may want to do this procedure. Everyone I've ever spoken to that has had this done says that the injection/cortisone itself hurts worse than the original pain for several days before it kicks in...Not only that, but I'm scared of epidurals. (I know it's stupid considering I MAY have to have one during labor, but I'm planning on avoiding it if at all possible.) Any experiences or feedback would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Cortisone Injection?

  • I had a cortisone injection in my shoulder when I had surgery.  They are kind of dangerous in that you can injure yourself worse and not realize it because you can't feel it.  I was in a sling, so I didn't have that hazard.  I only had one that lasted 12 hrs- I refused them after that.  It took away all the pain, but I was scared of hurting myself worse and not realizing it.

  • I wouldn't do it. Even if the ortho suggests it, you should talk with your OB. It seems an extreme measure for pg related back pain. Try some physical therapy first (if you haven't)

  • I wouldn't do it either.  I had a cortisone shot in my shoulder and the pain from the shot was worse then the pain the I had.  I felt like my shoulder was going to explode.  I will never get a cortisone shot again!  I would consult with you OB too before you did anything.
  • Steroids in general should be avoided while pregnant.  Definitely talk to your OB.  You also can only get so many cortisone injections in your life, so you only want one if its really necessary.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...
