2nd Trimester

Anterior Placenta and Movement

Yesterday at my U/S they told me I had an anterior placenta and if I hadn't felt movement yet that was why.  I have felt movement all over however so that wasn't a concern, but, I have been feeling thumps and things in my back like where my tail bone and colon are.  I asked about this b/c I seriously thought it was digestion and it did not feel right but the doctor said that because the uterine wall is thinner there with out the placenta to pad it (like in most pregnancies) I am feeling the baby kick and roll more strongly toward my back and not toward my front.  Has anyone else felt this?  I don't think it feels really fabulous and I can only imagine that when the baby gets bigger it will only feel worse.

Also, has anyone here given birth to a LO when your placenta was anterior.  I hear that most of the time the baby is flipped the wrong way during delivery with it's face facing up not down.  Does this cause problems, more pain, anything I should know about??? TIA

Re: Anterior Placenta and Movement

  • An anterior placenta does put you at greater risk for back labor. My placenta is anterior this time, and while it wasn't with DD, she was still "sunny side up". I can say that in retrospect I missed a lot of the signs of preterm labor, as I was attributing it a lot to just pregnancy back pain. It isn't comfortable, but I don't think any labor is.

There are things you can do to encourage baby to rotate the right way before engaging in your pelvis. Talk to your doctor, but I know mine said this time we will try heating my back and cooling my front- baby likes to turn towards the source of heat and will hopefully do a flip. It's not a lot to worry about though (unlike breech) and certainly nothing to start taking drastic measures over. Just know that you'll probably feel more and more back discomfort as the pregnancy progresses.

I have never felt movement around the back.  However it takes forever to feel any in front.   1st pregnancy was at 22w.  This pregnancy I just started feeling stuff yesterday.

  • I was told I have an anterior placenta. I have been sore in my lower back for a few weeks, but haven't felt anything else going on. However, I do have back issues which I go to a chiropractor regularly for, so who knows if they're related.

I 'think' I felt the first kicks the last 2 nights. Other than that, nothing. At my appt. last week, my ob said I would 'probably' start to feel something soon.

  • I had an anterior placenta with DD and again with this baby.  I have been feeling slight, sporadic movement for about a week.

I had no labor issues because of the anterior placenta. Nor did I feel anything in my back.

  • I had an AP last time (and think I might this time just because I haven't felt a ton of movement yet...although it's early still for me).

It really didn't cause any issues.  I still felt kiddo a ton - starting around 20 weeks or so.  Never in my back.

He was facing down at birth so no trouble there - no back labor either.  I did stay active during my pregnancy and sat on an exercise ball A LOT which I think helps with positioning.

  • Good to know!  Thanks ladies.  I just wasn't sure what to expect, my Dr. told me about the back labor though.  I can feel my LO moving inside in the front but not on the outside yet like if I lay my hand on my belly.  However, I am not liking this punching my tail bone thing.  I can only imagine what that is going to feel like in another month or two!
