I know joyco already saw my facebook "poll", but thought I'd ask here too to see if anyone else is having friends that are just going crazy with status updates. I have at least 2 friends that have updated more than 13 times already today. It's not even 3pm yet!
So - is there a number of posts per day that you would consider annoying from your friends? or maybe if they're all unique posts, it doesn't bother you (i'm more agreeable if the posts are unique, informative, etc)? what if someone only posts 3 times in a day, but they're all within 30 minutes of each other - too much?
Re: NBR: facebook posts...
i don't have a real number - it depends on the quality of the post. if it's an actual status update, written by my 'friend', then I guess I'd be ok with many posts per day. however, when it's just posting a link to something they found online, and they do that 10 times/day, then that's annoying to me.
in general, on most days, i wouldn't expect someone to really have more than, say 3 updates a day... morning/noon/night-ish? obviously if someone has a crazy day or something, that's an exception... i'm not planning on defriending anyone, but i do have 2 friends (one is a real friend, the other is a photog 'online' friend) that are in serious jeopardy if they continue with their 30+ posts a day.
It depends on the "quality" of the update. If that person happens to have 3 or 4 very interesting/funny/relavent/important updates in one day, that's cool. But if it's just updating for the sake of updating, once a day is enough.
13 a day from anyone would almost certainly annoy me and get them blocked from my feed. I can't even imagine what someone would update about 13 times before 3pm!
Yeah, I've got a couple biz associates that post like that. It's what they're posting about that usually annoys me. I get that he/she is doing it for exposure purposes (keeping your name in people's minds/faces does help promote business), but this one gal just posts links to all kinds of projects on the SAME website every day, like 5 or 6 times a day. OKAY! I get that you do projects for that site. Now I know. If I wanna know what you've done in the last 3.5478 minutes, I'll bookmark the site and visit when I have time, mmkaythanksbai.
However, I will say that the other night when m_and_m was at a fashion show and was updating a whole bunch with comments and pictures, I was very interested in her play-by-play! I think it's entertaining when I know FB friends are at an event I'm interested in and they post play by plays. Otherwise, I don't really need to know what's happening every 30 min while you sit at your desk, kwim?
I have a FB friend who updates 10 - 20 times a day, and it's mostly links to news articles and music videos. I ignore that stuff 98% of the time, it is annoying. Like, if he had any comment on the stuff he was linking to, I might not ignore him, but instead I treat it like spam.
Rarely Updated Blog
This. Although sometimes I'm Facebook illiterate and some "updates" from 20 hours ago will show up ahead of updates that were posted 4 minutes ago. I don't get it.
Or when I initially log on I won't see any updates and then I hit refresh and then all of them come in at once. So I don't even know if I'd notice somebody updating 20 times a day. Ha.
Because I am a nerd and because this stuff fascinates me, here's an article about an experiment that tried to replicate the algorithm behind the news feed and one's exposure on it.
Frequent updates on Facebook don't bother me because I don't access Facebook all that much during the day. However, I use Twitter a lot and there is such a thing as overtweeting. In fact, the best way to get me to unfollow someone is for them to Tweet every five minutes all day long. Insane.
I guess for frequent status updates to bother me, it would have to be an everyday thing. 13 updates every day = Hide. 13 updates while they're in NYC and they run into Jon Hamm and get invited to the Mad Men set and then go out partying with the cast of 30 Rock? I'd deal with that. But for everyday life, I'd say three status updates is really all you need.
I don't like the twitter updates, can be crazy. I know I do a lot of updates sometimes and sometimes I don't.
Hope i'm not the annoying person to someone :
yeah, I post a few more than 3 times a day usually. What can I say, I get bored and like to feel like I'm "talking" to the outside world.
Sorry. I probably won't quit doing it though, so you are welcome to hide me if you like. I wonder how many people have hidden me!
I think that most of my friends need to update more, I feel like I have all these friends and only see the same ones update once or twice a day. When I'm bored, I read my feed and it doesn't take very long to run into the previous day's updates. That sucks. And agree w/ Kitty, I really get irritated when people never have an update. Why have an account? Really? What's the point?
To spy on you. Duh.
I don't really care about people over-posting unless it's boring stuff and/or stuff that offends my delicate sensibilities.
If that's the case I just hide them, or if I'm really irritated, defriend.
You can hide tweets without hiding their other "real" status updates. I've done that to one person, and it's helped tremendously.
I know 3 people who have rather perpetual updates but it's all good stuff so I don't mind. And I have a huge portion of my friends list not on my news feed so the 25 or so people I follow on a regular basis is not overwhelming at all.
