finding out the sex

Hi all! I don't really post on here but I do lurk often and I was hoping you ladies could help me out. DH and I decided to be team green when we first found out that I was expecting, but not he really wants to find out the sex. I'm torn. I like the idea of being surprised when our LO is born but I also want to start buying cute baby stuff in colors that aren't gender neutral. What are all of you girls doing and what are you reasons for doing so?

TIA!

Re: finding out the sex

  • We will be finding out because neither of us have the patience to wait and we want to be able to plan ahead.

  • Either way you are going to be surprised right? So what is the big difference between being suprised at 20 weeks or being surpised at 40+ weeks.
  • I'm finding out the sex b/c I am a planner and need to know to complete my nursery and a few other selections.  Not that I"m going totally gender stereotypical, mind you, but I'd like a few personalized things and we can't do that without the name!

Second, I think it will help me and the husband bond with the LO.  We can begin to call the baby by his/her name and think about what s/he'll look like and who we want the baby to take after, etc...

For all those reasons and more, we're finding out.

  • While I would love to have this great surprise, I'm such a planner too and need to know. I will drive myself, and everyone around me, absolute crazy if I don't know.  Plus, DH's cousin is about a month ahead of us and while they are thinking of names we want to declare our names (childish? yes!) so they can't use it!

  • With DS we waited until delivery.  I loved it!  It was fun not knowing and I liked hearing everyone's guesses. I also wanted to get gender neutral stuff b/c we wanted more than 1 child. To be honest the moment in the delivery of my DH announcing the sex wasn't what I imagined! He forgot to announce and after (seriously) 3 minutes I had to ask what it was.

This time around we are finding out.  We wanted to try it out both ways! And after this DC is born I won't have time (with two kids at home) to make/go out and shop for gender specific stuff. I want to have everything all set and ready.

This. Plus it was super nice being able to start calling DS by his name while still in utero.

  • I think I am leaning more towards finding out now. You girls make a good point, it's still going to be a surprise, just sooner. = )
  • I was in a similar boat. I wanted to wait and DH wanted to find out. I finally caved from the peer pressure of him and the rest of our families. Plus, it was so hard to pass up all the pre baby shopping trips my mother keeps promising.

Now we are excited trying to come up with a cute gender reveal idea to share with our familiy!

  • We will definitely be finding out because 1. were anxious and 2. we want to plan accordingly. :)) good luck :)

  • 1. I am a very impatient.

    2. I think I will be just as surprised and happy finding out at an ultrasound with my husband there then I will be finding out at the hospital.

    3. I really want to do gender specific things for the nursery and I can't do that very well unless I know the sex ahead of time (unless I wait and buy everything  after the baby is born but where is the fun in that!?)

    4. my family would drive me crazy if I waited.

    5. I have a few friends that want to give me their old baby clothes. they want to get rid of it all as soon as possible and I doubt they would want to wait around for me to have the baby to hand it all over and it would be silly to take a bunch of girl stuff when it could be a boy or visa-versa.

The list goes on but I will stop here.

  • I want to find out because i am such a big planner and I want to know what to be excited about. Also I have to admit it will be easier since we only have to decide upon one name rather than two.

All this. I am excited to know what I can call the LO. Every step closer makes DH more involved and excited.

  • You know, you'll be surprised at your 20 week scan too.  :)

My husband and I made a day out of it last time.  We went to our u/s, then went out to lunch, and then bought our first boy stuff.  It was actually a very special day and we plan to do it again this time around.

  • We are finding out, neither one of us could wait to find out and I think my mom would freak if we didn't find out.  I am an only child and this is the first grandchild so she is as anxious as us to know.  Someone else said you are going to be surprised either way so does it matter if it is at 20 weeks or 40 weeks?  I like to be prepared.

This. Exactly. You'll still be surprised by how your baby looks, acts, etc. I agree with the other gals, I'm a planner and I can't wait to decorate and buy things for my boy or for my girl.

  • I have the 20-week scan on 11/23.  I thought we were going to find out the sex, but now I don't know.  I'm a planner, so I really want to find out at that scan (and I read the movie spoilers before I see a movie, of course I want to know the baby's sex before he/she gets here, lol).  I thought DH also wanted to find out at the scan, considering he's asked me at least 3x as to when this scan would be done, but now he's not sure.  He said he doesn't have to know right now.  So, who knows.  We still have time to discuss it.

  • I'm a planner - I hate having things not set 10 years before they happen .. lol but we didn't find out with our last and probably won't find out with this one. At first we were going to based on our situation but our moving date may be moved so there's no need for us to worry about finding out [I was worried b4 about leaving behind boys things if it was a boy or carting all my boy things out if baby is a girl]

For me it was wonderful when our son was born and the dr announced "It's a boy !!" I figure .. we'll have an entire lifetime knowing what sex this baby is, why not wait 40 weeks and be surprised. We like to be old fashioned I guess. Our family hates us. =]

  • I don't know what it's like to find out at delivery, but for me it was awesome to find out about DD at 20 wks.  After we found out and DH and I were able to give her a name, it became more real.  I can't really describe it, and maybe it's just me, but knowing made me feel soooo much more connected to her.
Expecting our 3rd little girl this New Year's!
