Babies: 6 - 9 Months

I took away the pacifier...

and It's hell. Well, I'm sure it could be worse but the kiddo doesn't like to fall asleep without it at all. He had only been getting it for naps/bedtime for the past 6 months anyways. On a normal day I can rock him and he is asleep within 10 minuets for naps/bedtime. Yesterday he took ONE nap for about 35 minuets (normally takes 2 1:30-2hr naps a day.) And it took me 45+ minuets to get him to sleep. I'm trying not to just nurse him to sleep either because isn't that just trading one crutch for another? Please tell me its going to get easier! I mean, hes 8 months old. He has to forget about it soon!

Re: I took away the pacifier...

  • We took Alice's away yesterday!  It took her forever to fall asleep the first time, like 3 hours....  However, last night I heard her wake up and put herself back to sleep several times.

the no cry sleep solution talks about something called the pantley pull off.  You use it while nursing so they don't fall sound asleep with the breast.  It seems to be working us.  Good luck!

  • Why put both of you through hell? He'll give it up when he's ready. I've never seen a college kid (or an elementary school kid, for that matter) walking around with a pacifier in his mouth.

We use a paci for sleeping and have no intention of taking it away just yet, but I totally saw a child who was over the age of 5 walking around with a paci a couple months ago. I couldn't believe it!

  • Personally I'm doing it b/c the baby cannot fall asleep without it, and cries at night until we retrieve it.  This includes when she throws it under the bed, all 5 of the pacis we have.  Have to move a bunch and use a yard stick for retrieval.  She was so much happier today from actually sleeping most of the night.
  • why are you taking it away now if you dont mind me asking? If you ask your pediatrician or any ped dentist, they dont start worring about it until children are 2.5 - 3yrs old. And you can usually break them of it before then by telling them to give to the paci fairy or something along those lines...

  • DD isnt ready and neither am I.  I think she will have hers taken away by the "Paci fairy" several years from now!

I think it was WildCatPrincess who knew someone in college who used a paci (I'm still not giving ours up, though)

    THIS!

  • Sorry it took so long for a reply. I am taking it away because he wakes up multiple times at night for it. He is not sleeping as well BECAUSE of the pacifier. I have never done CIO so its not like I am leaving him in his crib to cry without his paci. I am holding/nursing/rocking him until he falls asleep.

Be careful you're not just trading one crutch for another.
