Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

My kid beats me.

Yes.  He kicks me (especially whenever he has shoes on), chases me around to bite me although he IS getting better with that.  The worse thing he does --- he'll come up to me and slap me in the face and smile and say 'Ow' ... yeah, about that, it's gotta stop.  I am the ONLY one he will do this to.  He doesn't do it to DH or anyone else.  What gives and what's your advice on disciple or handling this situation?

  • DS is into hitting right now too.  I just hold his hand, make a sad face and say "no hitting mommy, that hurts."

It's not having much of an effect right now, but I hope if I keep doing it, he'll get the point eventually.

  • I had a friend that would tap them back where ever they hit her IE they slap her, she would tap them on the cheek. I don't care for this idea, but she swore it works. She never taped hard enough to hurt them..... I guess if you get desperate enough....

Ive never agreed with this idea. How do you teach right from wrong with a wrong?

My ds loves to hit me too. He just walks up to me and starts wacking my leg while Im cooking and he really winds up!! He tries to bite my legs or slap my face. I think its for the reaction/boredom and just because he can. I usually say *GASP* Be gentle. Htting/Biting hurts mommy! Ouch! Then I show him how to be gentle. He usually gets bored with the gentle touch and walks away.

The worst part is... he smiles really big when he is hitting me. What did we ever do to our lo's to deserve that?? lol

  • I try and tell DD to do nice because she will smack me right in the face! We taught her "do nice" when she started grabbing the cats fur and pulling hair. So she will rub nicely and give a kiss when we tell her to do nice but it doesnt always work. GL.

  • i've got a bruiser too!  luckily the biting was short lived but he hits frequently.  each time he hits, i hold his hands, get down on his level and look him in the eyes and say "ouch! we use gentle hands.  hitting hurts mommy."

    Pretty much this.

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.
  • I catch his hand when he tries to hit me and say "No" firmly then I say "Be easy." He usually tries a couple more times then walks away.
