Thermometer - ?

The only working one we have is rectal thermometer. We were given a forehead thermometer but it never worked (or I am an an idiot). In any case, I would like to have another on hand. So, does it matter really? Ear, armpit, oral, forehead? I know if the fever gets really high the doc wants to know the rectal temp anyway. What do you ladies have? Thanks!

Re: Thermometer - ?

  • I was a pretty big dummy with the temporal lobe one, the temperature it gave never seemed right to me and it always beeped before I was done scanning. We just take in the armpit and add 1/2-1 degree on to the final temperature based on our drs recommendation.

  • We got stick on ones at BRU that you stuck under the arm & could leave on. That was handy, so if DD was sick we could check her temp at any time without having to "take" it again. But we did find you had to add 2-3 degrees to it.

Now we use a regular thermomenter under the armpit, then add 1 degree.
  • I don't have any recs because we've always used the rectal thermometer when DD has a fever. It's what they always used while she was in the NICU, and it gives the most accurate results.

  • Rectal is best (for accuracy), but my 3 year old will not sit still long enough to let me do that to him anymore. We got the Braun Thermoscan ear thermometer a few months ago and that's what we've been using.

I use the rectal thermometer up to 12 months.

    HTH!

  • We use the temporal lobe thermometer.  I personally like it.  It beeps while I drag it across the forehead, but I just keep dragging it and it seems accurate.  I use it on my own forehead, and when I feel normal the temperature is normal and when I don't the temp is up.  (DS makes me take my temperature as part of our bedtime routine...  he's obsessed with that thing).
