Toddlers: 24 Months+

Need advice on early wake ups

DS has been consistently waking up between 4:30 - 5:30 am.  He is usally a solid 10 hour sleeper.  He tends to cycle through this during the fall/winter months, and he goes to sleep at 8pm.

He has been in a twin size bed for 3 months, and when he would wake up early in his crib, we would just let him CIO until he went back to sleep.  Now DS knocks on his door and wants to get up for the day or lay in our bed.

I want to walk him back to bed and leave him in his room until at least 5:30.  DH thinks it's cruel to leave him in his room to cry.  What should we do?

TIA!

Re: Need advice on early wake ups

  • Is it possible he's cold? I tried everything with DS, a snack before bed, making sure his room was pitch black, making sure he got lots of fresh air before bed, and then my mom made him a big duvet that I thought was going to be way too hot and cook him, and he went from waking up at 6am to sleeping until 8am. I would have never guessed he was cold if we hadn't stumbled upon it as a fluke. His smaller blankets never stayed on him though, so once he had a bigger heavier blanket it was so obvious that's what the problem was.

Before we found that solution, I would usually bring him into bed with us if I was really tired and didn't want to get up, but that's another can of worms you may not want to open, though it usually worked.

Hope you can figure out something, that is not a friendly hour to wake up!

  • So sorry to hear you are suddenly getting the early wake ups!  My DD always gets up between 4:45 and 5:00, so I'm over the moon when she actually sleeps til 5:30.

That said, DD is in a toddler bed, and we stock it with 5-6 books, a sippy of water, and lots of imaginative toys (dolls and animal figures).  She still has her Fisher Price soother on a rail, which gives her enough light to read by, and she likes the music. She can amuse herself for up to 45 minutes, no tears involved.

  • DS wakes up early sometimes to use the bathroom and we just tell him that everyone is still sleeping and it's still night time and he needs to go back to bed.  It usually buys us another hour or so.  Have you thought about trying a toddler alarm clock like this one maybe?
