that's funny! I only recently started this at home.
get a tablespoon scooper and scoop coffee into the basket at a rate of one scoop per cup (you'll fill up the coffee pot to the desired number of cups and then pour the water into the machine.
not level scoops, slightly overflowing scoops.
less if you prefer weak coffee.

OR get a french press, and it is pretty much the same, except you put in the coffee, add the hot water (from a tea kettle or microwave) and then press the strainer in.
nice.

You just need to get a coffee grinder. Grind the beans, put the grounds into the filter, fill up the water in the machine, and press start. Easy peasy Mc n' cheesy,

No, french presses are cheap (like $17 at Target). I prefer my french press to my nice coffee maker. If you do get a coffee maker, get one with a mesh filter instead of the disposable filters. I like that style better.
no--there's a nice one at target for 20 bucks, and I think that is the more expensive one.
it's a beaker with a plunger, essentially!
MY current coffee maker (don't be all jealous, now...) cost 6 dollars and 48 cents at walmart!!
I have no IDEA where our regular one is in storage- or the french press, and I wanted a white one to match our rental kitchen- and Walmart had one for under 7 dollars!!! I was so proud to bring it home!!
it works fine- but it is kinda junky.
I would def. be bummed if I paid more for it.

Sounds expensive.
Nope, they're cheaper and easier than an electric coffee maker. Think of the coffee eqivalent of making tea with loose tea and an old fashioned tea ball. It's simply a glass pot--you put the coffee in loose and then use the plunger to push the grounds down to the bottom of the pot before you pour. BTW--you can also make tea in it or add cinnamon sticks and clove and then steep with warm apple cider.

This is the one I was just looking at at target, but holy hell. That is expensive (hey, I am a single mom!), and then what the heck do I even do with the liquid concoction after the french press?
Keurig! Love ours! But they're expensive. If you buy a regular coffee pot I second the mesh filter rather then the disposable ones. I used a heaping teaspoon per cup. So I would fill the coffeepot with water up to the 8 cups line and then spoon in 8 heaping teaspoons of coffee in the mesh basket and press start (DH and I both drink coffee so that's why I put in 8). Simple!
If you're not serving more than 1-2 people at a time, the smaller version of the one you posted (3 cup) would work well, too, and it costs a bit less (have to put it in the cart to see the price but it's under $17)
Totally do not need an 8 cup! That's big. For H and I, we have a small 4 cupper. It doesn't take up much counter space. We bought the little Cuisinart one at BB&B for $20, plus the $5 coupon. The first one lasted us 4 years. We had to replace it about a year ago, but heck, it's $15.
If you figure 2$-5$ a day for coffee at the store, it pays for itself in a couple of months.
I completely agree, but I would have to save that much for a couple of months just to pay for it. I can spare $15-30 for a cheap coffee maker today, but I can't spare that much. Not to mention it is not something I am willing to put on credit, as my house is almost sold, credit card almost paid off, and looking to refinance my car.
What time of beans should I get? How much do I grind just for myself? If I grind too much can I save them for tomorrow?
If you buy beans, you'd have to spend another $20 or so on a grinder too. We just buy the pre-ground stuff. With the rate we go through a can, it doesn't get much time to become unfresh or whatever it is that coffee does. Also, cleaning a grinder is a pain. We have one and I have never used it except when we have guests.
If you do buy beans, be sure to keep them in the freezer. You can grind more than you need for a day; just keep them in an airtight container. Contrary to popular belief, freezing ground coffee does nothing.
I don't think you're missing anything by not buying a Keurig. I've had coffee from them, and it's not for me. I hate that you can't make it as strong (or weak) as you want. Not worth the money to me. There are better expensive ones than that! For someone who won't be drinking coffee regularly, a $5 one from Walmart will be fine, but if you'll be using it daily, it's not going to last long. Check your clearance racks at Target. I always see expensive ones on clearance for really cheap. I got my $120 coffee maker for $12 on clearance there.
You people must make a hell of a lot more than I do!
I would have to save to buy one of those~
I got one for Christmas last year. Ok, I got it for myself, but it was technically from DH and the kids. It was my only present or I might have gotten a few little ones like books or something, but pretty much the only present. I cannot live without my Keurig now.

I agree that French press is awesome!!!
I need to stop at the local coffee shop everyday and just start making my own.
I need a target. I also need to take a nap... Or do paperwork.
I don't even know what the heck a french press is.

Me?
Lurve my Nespresso machine (pods, so no knowledge of coffee making necessary) and you can make both coffee and espresso. Yum.
Oh, and a french press is a nice alternative
Bodum makes great french/coffee presses

Negative, he doesn't like coffee. Nor is he really around in the mornings. He has his own house he can wake up at.
I've really been struggling to stay awake in the mornings, so i have been stopping for coffee, but I need to start making my own.
I'm asking for one for Christmas!
This three cup one from Bodum is $14.99 with free shipping/no tax (I've ordered from this place before and the item did show up

Heh-- From who?! My parents spend about $50/kid, usually including shampoo, laundry detergent, dishsoap, etc.
I'm hoping that "newish" someone will get me another $$$ gift certificate to VS like he did before my bday. Just in time for another semi-annual sale.
Now, I want coffee.

There is an ace here in town! Maybe I will head there this weekend if Walmart doesn't suffice.
