Maisie

So we've decided on "Maisie," but we have some concern that people may pronounce it "Macy." We want the pronunciation to be "May-Zee," so an alternate spelling is "Maizie." The problem is, of course, the unfortunate correlation to corn.

So, the question is, do you think people will pronounce "Maisie" as "May-Zee" or "Macy?"

Re: Maisie

  • My first thought was, "Why wouldn't you just spell it Macy?", because I assumed that it was pronounced that way.

  • I think people will pronounce it correctly....May-zee. Don't change the spelling.
  • I would spell it Maisy, like Daisy with an "M".
  • I pronounced it May-zee. I think it's a fine spelling...either Maisie or Maisy.

ETA: Maisie is actually on Behind the Name. I guess it's a diminutive form of Mairead. Who knew?

  • Maisey is my dogs name, and I love it... my DH prounounces it Macy, so all the neighbors thinks it's macy... i'm like IT'S MAISEY!!!  I wouldn't change the spelling just correct silly people!  My neighbor just last week (we've been living here for over 3 years) said, "wait, your dogs name isn't macy, it's Maisey?!"

    Really cute name though.

I though Maisie was an younique spelling of Macy.  And I wouldn't make the spelling worse by adding a Z

  • I would pronounce Maisie as May-Zee, so I think you are okay.  I like it better with the "s" than a "z".  I also like the other poster's suggestion of Maisy, though.

What middle name are you using?

I not a big fan of "Maisy," the real potential problem with the name is the cutesy factor, and I think Maisy exacerbates it worse than Maisie.

As for middle names, we are in a real pickle. It is a source of great marital strife. Basically, here are the options:

     Maisie Renee
     Maisie Rebecca
     Maisie Lilah
     Maisie Tabitha

My mom killed my idea of  Maisie Leigh.  Maisie Grace, while pretty, is too similar to "Macy Gray."  Maisie Claire, which would otherwise be a front-runner, is too much like magazine "Marie Claire". All websites suggest  Maisie Elizabeth, but I dislike.

    Any suggestions welcome.

  • I was going to say you'd have to live under a rock to not know how to pronounce Maisie, but then the first responder had to go and debunk that one...

Nevertheless, I think MOST people know that Maisie = MAY-zee, and that Macy is an entirely different name. I'd just spell it correctly. No Z necessary.

    Ditto.

  • I pronounced it as May-zee just like the majority who have posted so I think you're safe. There will always be people who get it wrong but they should be the minority. My name is Nichol, pronounced the same as Nicole and still some people will pronounce it with the cha sound instead of the hard c. I think mispronunciation comes with most names.
  • I looked at it and thought of corn right away. I also thought of the movie "Grown Ups".

I think people will have a hard time pronouncing it. It is awful.

    This.

     Yep.

You spell it with a 'z' and I immediately think of corn.

This again.  But either Maisie or Maisy I would pronounce May-Zee, not Macy.

  • Coming out of lurkdom to say a good friend of mine named her daughter Maizie, b/c of the same concern you have.  Didn't want people to call her "Macy".  FWIW!

  • I'd go with Maisy. For some reason Maisie looks wrong to me.
  • I love Maisie. I think it is really cute. I would spell it Maisie or Maisy, definitely not Maizie because it's too corny.

  • I would use Maisie as a nn for Margaret, since I feel it is a little cutesy for a grown woman on its own. That said, it's a cute name. I would definitely spell it Maisie, and not Maizie or Maisy, because I'm pretty sure that's a more traditional spelling.
