Need HELP with gassy baby

DS gets SO gassy some times.  But it is so hit and miss.  Sometimes he will nap great, other times he's awake every so often because of gas and it wakes him up and then I have to try and get him back to sleep.  Some times he will nurse great and have no problems, other times he shows signs that he is hungry but he will start sucking and you can hear his stomach gurgle and make noises within a couple min and then he gets mad and acts like he is in pain from gas bubbles or something.  This circle of nurse a few min, get upset/in pain just goes round and round till I can get him settled down.  I've tried gripe water and mylicon and neither one help him.

I have tried pumping and giving him a bottle and the few bottles we have tried seem to have the same problem.  He either is taking it in too fast or something and ends up mad/in pain.  I've tried stopping him every few min and burping him and no luck....usually get no burp.  I need something that will help this poor little guy (and me too).

Oh and my diet is pretty safe.  VERY little dairy, nothing spicy, nothing like broccoli, caffeine maybe once a week.

Re: Need HELP with gassy baby

  • The gurgling you're hearing could be his empty stomach growling when the milk hits it. It happens to my LO sometimes when he's really hungry. Try nursing him a little sooner, before he's crying or showing major hunger signs. If you still think it's a gas issue, try giving mylecon and burping before he eats.

  • my DS has been having a lot of issues like this too. I'm starting to wondering if it's AR and got him started on some zantac this week to see if it will make a difference. We are on day 2 and so far he is seeming better. I hate having him on medicine, but if it will make him feel better, it's worth a shot.

I had a free sample of Similac Sensitive and tried a bottle of that this morning and he seemed to do real well with it.  In his next bottle I gave him breast milk and he didnt seem to do as well as he did with the formula.  I really would rather not quit with the BM already but if thats what's causing the issue then I'm just happy to have found the problem.  Like I stated in my post I do watch what I eat so I dont know what it could be.....

  • Could you mix the formula and BM? That way he still gets the BM, but maybe doesn't make him as gassy. I would try the drops. They really seem to help my little one!

I've tried Mylicon and Gripe Water...neither help.  They did help DS #1 when he had gas which leads me to believe DS #2 needs a bigger change than just gas drops

  • i am in the same exact situation, although i have tried sim sens. and no difference....but it's making me feel like my bm is poisonous. i hate  having her be fine and then soo gassy after i feed her. its awful
  • Would you consider pumping and feezing for a week while formula feeding. That way your supply remains okay, and you're not dumping out good milk, but just give formula and see if it helps?

I have considered this over and over, but never do it b/c it just seems like so much work (the pumping).  and everyone says BM should be gentler on the stomach than formula. but still...i wonder.

if you do try something that works, would you let me know - send me a pm? There aren't many out there that are BF'ing have tried everything and nothing works. everyone says mylicon and gripe water, but like you, that does not work for us. I also tried a happitummy (google it) and it does seem to give some relief, but not preventative, and not a miracle either.

Yeah, I might give that a try...although I agree with you, its a lot of work to keep up with pumping.  I will PM you if I do it and find anything out!

  • My lo was having gas pains also. He was getting so little sleep (and neither was I!) He would nurse and an hour later be upset and crying.  I tried gripe water and gas drops and didn't see any improvement. Sorry I can't help. But I just wanted to say he did outgrow it about 2 weeks ago. Just had to wait for his tummy to mature.
