I guess I'm a fan of the show "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant", but only when I happen to catch it. I don't DVR it or even know what time it airs, so I obviously could have missed a thousand episodes that contradict what I'm about to say..but has anyone else noticed that the babies are always born perfectly healthy??! Not that I'm pulling for a sick baby episode at all, thank god they're born healthy! It just makes me think that the show may be giving some women the impression that it's ok to not necessarily treat yourself like a pregnant lady when you're KU. Most of the episodes I've seen the women are still drinking or smoking. I just feel like, couldn't this be giving some women the wrong idea? I wish they would put a little more emphasis on the importance of prenatal care and abstaining from dangerous habits while pregnant!
Re: "I didn't know I was pg"
I think the episode I caught the other day (I watch it like you do) mentioned something right at the start about "and were they putting their baby's lives in danger?" But never said anything about it again.
I would like to see a show in 10 years going back to these children. It would be interesting to see where they are. Some things may not show up in the few months between birth and when they tape the episode. Learning difference might not even show up until they are quite a bit older.
They don't say this every time. I've seen episodes where they show pictures of the mother drinking during pregnancy, because she didn't know.
I'd believe it when they say it; not everyone drinks or smokes.
In general most people drink. Maybe not a ton but they do. However not everyone smokes and some people don't do either. If I didn't know I was pregnant I wouldn't be doing anything harmful to my baby. I don't smoke or drink (ever) and I take vitamins every day anyway. Obviously not every single woman has that apply to them but I don't think its that weird if there was a woman who didn't drink or smoke during their unknown pregnancy.

A lot of the episodes I've seen the women have something else going on, that they're able to blame for their pregnancy symptoms. I agree it sounds crazy to have no idea, but I do think it's possible considering I haven't had any symptoms really other than no period. But some women on the show had "spotting" that they wrote off as their period because they were always very light or irregular.
I just feel like if theyr'e going to make a "reality" show about women who didn't know they were pregnant until they delivered, they should show both sides. I feel like basically ignoring the fact that many children would likely have a lot of problems if their mothers continued certain habits throughout pregnancy, is sort of irresponsible.

The episode that's airing right now's description is "A rock singer discovers she is pregnant and in labor after smoking and drinking." Also, several times I've seen moms say, "I was really worried because I drank through my whole pregnancy."
But I didn't smoke or drink even before I got pregnant. It's not that odd.
One of the first few had a bad outcome. The mom had twins and the baby girl died.
I had an anterior placenta and a baby who almost never moved. It happens. If someone is in their first pregnancy it might not feel exactly like they "think" it should and dismiss it as bad gas. I know I could have.
I can see that happening. It just seems strange to me that they have found enough women who didn't know to base a long lasting series on it! I suppose it must happen.
I have a friend who 18 years ago didn't know she was pregnant... well, she suspected, but between 3 HPT's and 2 doctor's tests got 5 negatives, so she dismissed it as just gaining a bit extra weight. She has always been a little chunky (slightly overweight, maybe). I saw her about 2X a week throughout her whole pregnancy, and never noticed anything different about her - honestly! We knew each other through dance school, so it's not like she was able to dress to hide anything either. She was on the pill the whole time, and had at least enough spotting to believe she was still having a period.
One day, she had bad back pain, and began driving herself to the hospital to be checked out. The pain became unbearable, so she pulled over to call the ambulance. The EMT checked her out, and told her "uh, lady, you're having a baby!" They believe she went full-term. Somehow, her daughter was completely healthy, and is a brilliant freshman in college now.
If I didn't know someone who has been through it, I never would have believed it either.
