Anyone asked their doc if it's okay to start to work out after bfp?

I currently don't work out at all but have been wanting to start the c25k and some mild lifting. Has anyone asked their doc it it's okay to start to work out? I know its fine to continue if you already were but thats not the situation I'm in. Of course I'll ask my doc at my first appt but wanted to know what you ladies have heard/done. Thanks.

  • My doc told me not to take up any new exercise routines. Of course, I have only been walking for the last few months so I have been pretty lazy. Were you already consistently working out doing something else? I am sure it would be fine if you were already quite active but it's best to talk to your doc like you said. Good luck.

  • Def not C25k! You don't want to start running! If your not a seasoned runner it is not something to start now.I was doing C25k before BFP. However,I took one month off and got BFP.

Your pulse shouldn't get over 145 I believe. Just do light walking and lifting.DOn;t go crazy, It's not worth it.

  • My doc is encouraging me to continue working out.  I only worked out for a month prior to getting pregnant, and she said that was completely fine even though I didnt excercise regularly before.  I think working out moderately is fine according to my research.  I get on the eliptical 4-5 times a week for 20-30 minutes and lift weights for toning only and I am feeling great!

  • I was on my week 3 of the C25K plan and I was getting into it and LOVING it.  I've halted that until my first appoint and I will ask her then.  My first appt is still three weeks away and I will be around 10 weeks then.

  • My doctor said exercise is great, but that this was not the time to be starting anything new and strenuous, or that would expose me to possible abdominal trauma.(she gave the example of kick boxing - go ahead and do it, but you can't spar). She also said not to lift anything over 50 lbs, and that if I wasn't accustomed to doing that in the first place, to not start. She didn't specifically mention heart rate stuff, but she did say that if I the intensity of the work out was one where I would sweat and breathe heavily, to just make sure that I was taking frequent breaks.

  • I'm not currently working out at all. The most exercise I usually get is doing housework. I'm not overweight tough, just would like to be in better shape and feel stronger. Of course I'm not willing to jeopardize my pg but I was hoping I could start doing something, maybe just walking if c25k would be too much. Thanks for the replies. I'm definitely going to ask my doc too.

  • I'll be interested to hear what your doc says--please report back!  From everything I've read/heard, working out and staying active during pregnancy is really helpful for postpartum recovery and gives you better strength and endurance during labor, which makes sense as it's a physical act!  I would think starting to walk regularly and light lifting would be really good for you, even if c25k isn't realistic to start at this point.
  • My doctor told me moderate exercise is good for you during pregnancy. She said I could continue any type of exercise I was already doing, but to not start a new program. I did the first 2 days of C25K before my BFP, but I immediately stopped. We have a treadmill, so I will probably just walk on that for my exercise.

  • My midwife said not to let heartrate go above 140. I've always heard before that it's OK to start walking or swimming during pregnancy, but if you aren't already exercising regularly you should not start with more intense workouts like running.
