So we went in for our 8 week visit thinking they would at least do blood work or SOMETHING! They took my temperature and my blood pressure. Then said congratulations, here's a pamphlet of crap you already know, we'll see you again in a month to do your ultrasound and blood work.
I was sooo disappointed!! I was really hoping to at least get some sort of news that our lil babe is doin ok in there. I guess the waiting game begins all over again
On the up side, by the time we hear the heartbeat, we will be able to officially announce it on our wedding anniversary which is kinda cool...
Re: Had our 1st doctor's appointment today, big disappointment!

My first appt was a bit of a bummer cause I thought they were going to check me out and everything but they didn't. A week and a half later, I did get an U/S and got to see my beating blob, the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.
Keep your head up...your next appt will be full of joy!

Oh wow i guess im lucky. at 8 wks our appt is 2-3 hrs we get an u/s with the heart week and everthing
Pretty much exactly this. At my first appointment, it wasn't with a dr, a nurse just had us fill out a lot of stuff, and went through a big list of what their practice does and everything. It was really boring. My next appointment wasn't all that fantastic either, just a pap, pelvic, breast exam and listening to the heartbeat on a doppler, which we'd already done.
Dr's appointments are going to be really boring, and, for the most part, uneventful.

this is why now with my insurance/doctor the first "appt" is just a phone interview to go over basic history and answer basic questions. Then you go in for a real first appt.

After speaking with other recent moms I am switching OBs. My longtime OBGYN had me scheduled for a nurse appt only at 8 weeks. Thank god I was taking my own prenatals and reading my own books. I mean c'mon.. "oh good, your 2 months in, maybe we should give you prenatals now".
And they weren't going to do anything at that appt beyond bloodwork. First U/S to hear heartbeat wasn't going to be until 11 or 12 weeks. I mean, really. What if it was ectopic, they would make me get attached 4 weeks longer than usual just because they are a busy practice.
I asked around with friends and I'm now seeing an OB for nurse appt immediately... and U/S will be at week 8, not 12. Very glad to have found this out now, before realizing that I had received less than average care months down the road.

Um, the first practice sounds like average care to me.
My first appointment is tomorrow (finally! week 10).
I've seen a wide enough range of experiences on here that I called last week and just asked what they will and will not be doing. Some is disappointing, like no ultrasound until week 20, but there will be a doppler and some blood tests and an actual exam by the doctor (pap, etc.) along with all the medical history questions. They said to plan on at least two hours. They gave me the prenatal lecture when I first called to make the appt about four weeks ago.
