1st Trimester

Had our 1st doctor's appointment today, big disappointment!

So we went in for our 8 week visit thinking they would at least do blood work or SOMETHING!  They took my temperature and my blood pressure.  Then said congratulations, here's a pamphlet of crap you already know, we'll see you again in a month to do your ultrasound and blood work.

I was sooo disappointed!!  I was really hoping to at least get some sort of news that our lil babe is doin ok in there.  I guess the waiting game begins all over again :(  On the up side, by the time we hear the heartbeat, we will be able to officially announce it on our wedding anniversary which is kinda cool...

  • No blood work or anything? Did they at least do an exam? I was disappointed my first appointment with DD. I had an exam and got blood drawn but nothing else. Nothing to say "HEY you're pregnant and here is your baby!" Hoping it'll be different this time around.

  • No they are doing the pap at the next appointment as well.  I was really confused what the point of this appointment even was other than to make sure I was taking my prenatals Tongue Tied

  • My first appt was a bit of a bummer cause I thought they were going to check me out and everything but they didn't.  A week and a half later, I did get an U/S and got to see my beating blob, the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

Keep your head up...your next appt will be full of joy!

  • don't be surprised if they don't even try to hear the heartbeat until 12 weeks.
  • Oh wow i guess im lucky. at 8 wks our appt is 2-3 hrs we get an u/s with the heart week and everthing

  • I was disappointed with my last doc visit too! I found out that we don't get our first u/s until 18-20 weeks. I got my first u/s at 10 weeks with my first pregnancy. Soooo bummed!
  • I went in for my first appointment today. The DR did a pap and a breast exam and he did an ultrasound and I did all the blood work. We were able to see the baby and the heartbeat, we weren't able to hear it though but mine was pretty eventful. I'm sorry you didn't get to do all of that on your first appointment. That's pretty crazy, I thought all first appointments went the same way. Atleast on your next appointment you will be able to see more of the baby.
  • I'm just lurking, but speaking from experience a majority of your appointments will basically be: listen to heart beat, tell you what to expect at the next appointment, then end with ask/answer questions. I know you want to know more but that's basically all that happens.

  • We went in for a nurse educator appt at about 7 weeks - just to make sure we were doing things right and to get our history and labs drawn.  We met with the doc right around 8 weeks, and discussed the labs (no hormones or HCG done, though, I thought this was odd!), and got an internal exam - no ultrasound yet.  I'd just had a pap done in July to get the go ahead to start trying, so thankfully didn't have to get another one.  I was told I felt a little small for 8 weeks, but my cycles can be irregular - so I think we are okay.  We chose not to do the NTS so that we can get our dates straight, we go on October 27th - I'm soo nervous - I've got lots of symptoms, but afraid baby might not be okay.

Pretty much exactly this. At my first appointment, it wasn't with a dr, a nurse just had us fill out a lot of stuff, and went through a big list of what their practice does and everything. It was really boring. My next appointment wasn't all that fantastic either, just a pap, pelvic, breast exam and listening to the heartbeat on a doppler, which we'd already done.

Dr's appointments are going to be really boring, and, for the most part, uneventful.

  • I have my first appointment tomorrow, and it will only be to pee on another stick, and talk to the midwive. Nothing else happens until 10-12 weeks at which times there will be bloodwork, an exam, and listen to the heartbeat. I might not even get an u/s at that point.

this is why now with my insurance/doctor the first "appt" is just a phone interview to go over basic history and answer basic questions.  Then you go in for a real first appt.

  • After speaking with other recent moms I am switching OBs. My longtime OBGYN had me scheduled for a nurse appt only at 8 weeks. Thank god I was taking my own prenatals and reading my own books. I mean c'mon.. "oh good, your 2 months in, maybe we should give you prenatals now".

And they weren't going to do anything at that appt beyond bloodwork. First U/S to hear heartbeat wasn't going to be until 11 or 12 weeks. I mean, really. What if it was ectopic, they would make me get attached 4 weeks longer than usual just because they are a busy practice.

I asked around with friends and I'm now seeing an OB for nurse appt immediately... and U/S will be at week 8, not 12. Very glad to have found this out now, before realizing that I had received less than average care months down the road.

Um, the first practice sounds like average care to me.

  • My first appointment is tomorrow (finally! week 10).

I've seen a wide enough range of experiences on here that I called last week and just asked what they will and will not be doing. Some is disappointing, like no ultrasound until week 20, but there will be a doppler and some blood tests and an actual exam by the doctor (pap, etc.) along with all the medical history questions. They said to plan on at least two hours. They gave me the prenatal lecture when I first called to make the appt about four weeks ago.
