Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Underweight 13 month old who stopped drinking milk! Help

My daughter will be 13 months next week. She has been underweight (3%) and the doctor said to give her 24-28 oz of milk daily. She was doing fine before. She had 25 oz on Friday. Saturday, Sunday and today she has only had a few oz. She refuses to drink from the bottle. She refuses to drink milk from a sippy cup. I gave her strawberry milk just to get some calories in her. She seems happy. She doesn't seem to have an ear ache. I just don't know what to do. Feeding her has been hard enough! Suggestions? I don't need snarky responses please. I'm beyond stressed as it is.

  • The only time my LO does this is when he has an ear infection.  Can you take her to the pedi to rule that out?  In the meantime, you can try to hydrate her by adding milk to purees and spoon feeding her (if she'll tolerate that).  It sounds like an ear infection to me.  GL!

  • Wow, I would love for DD to get UP to the 3% for weight!  She is almost 20 months and about 20 lbs and a TINY peanut!  but she is happy and healthy.  My pedi wants her to see a nutritionist, but DD eats a ton!  Tonight I made risotto for dinner and tomorrow she will eat a full adult size serving for lunch. She has my insane metabolism.  And she has never once drank milk - she refuses.  We do 2 yogurts a day plus cheese for dairy.
With eating my mom keeps remind me of 2 things - first they have tiny tummys!  If we eat a full sandwich and we are 5 times their weight, then they should eat one fifth of the sandwich.  Also, DD has days when she is not into eating at all, mostly when she is teething.  Those days I make her comfort food - mac and cheese, risotto, pasta....  but sometimes I am just not hungry.
I really hope this is not snarky (I am beyond tired adn DD has a cough/cold), this is really what I have used as my mantra in terms of her eating.
    good luck!

  • I've heard people say put a little bit of apple sauce or hershey's chocolate in her bottle. Hannah doesn't care for the strawberry.

  • MY LO wont drink milk, I give him yogurt, milk in cherios, cheese... his pedi said not to worry... so maybe give LO lots of yogurt? GL
  • You weren't snarky. Thanks for your info. It's been hard to feed her since day one. So when she just refused the bottle the other day, I FREAKED. I just need to relax and its hard. My doctor makes me feel bad that she is so tiny and not always on the same curve. We try, when she's done she's done. We've taken her to a gastro specialist who basically said he thinks she is fine but he'll do some non-invasive tests. He had us go to a nutrionist. She basically to feed her high calorie stuff.  I don't care that she is on the 3rd %, I just want her to stay on it. You know?
  • Someone on this board tried a mix of milk and OJ the other day and her LO liked it.  Maybe try that?  Other than that, I have no real suggestions.  Just know that I sympathize.  My DS has dropped from 94% in weight to 15% in 8 months because he refuses to eat more than a few bites per meal.  The pedi had me switch from milk to pediasure last week to increase calories, so I've been giving that a try.  It is frustrating and stressful, but like you, I just have to relax and keep trying, I guess.

  • Ditto previous posters on other types of dairy - yogurt, cheese.  My pedi suggested melting cheese on an english muffin for my picky DS who needed to beef up a little.  I also would offer bottled milk again kids get in moods give stuff up and then take it back - I know my ds was like that. Good luck.

wow you don't know what a relief it is to actually see someone with a LO close to DD size. She's only 12mos and is 13lbs currently but  I hope she makes it up to 20lbs by 20mos!

as for what to do about LO not drinking milk, have you tried PediaSure? DD doesn't drink even close to  10- 20oz of milk in a day, we've been supplementing with the pediasure. It tastes like a vanilla (or chocolate if you got that flavour) milkshake so maybe your LO would take that. Our DD definitely polishes off a few oz of it no problem. It does get expensive though so maybe mix it with a bit of milk after a while so they don't start to prefer it over milk completely.
