Can the doc pull the plug?

There was a woman in the waiting room at my doctor's office today. She said her due date is November 3rd, but she's been 3 cm dilated for several weeks, the baby's head is down and the baby has dropped - the thing she is waiting on is her mucus plug. She said the doctor tried to pull it out but couldn't quite get it. I have this vision of pulling the plug out of the bath tub (like the old-fashioned rubber plug with the chain on it). Do docs really do this?

I worked at an OB/GYN office for about 4 years and I never heard of an MD doing this. Plus she's not even due for another couple weeks, I doubt the doctor would try that hard to start her labor up.
